I just start the nursing program at GCSU and I've been assigned to have my clinicals at MCCG. I just wanted to know what I should expect going there.
How is it generally working at MCCG? I wasn't too excited because of the drive from Milledgeville and I'm really not looking forward to waking up super early in the morning. I work at Oconee Regional now and I'm sure the two hospitals are completely different.
Did anyone else go through GCSU's nursing program?

I recently graduated from the US Army practical nurse course. Half of our rotations were at Eisenhower army medical center and the other half were at MCG with some VA rotations thrown in here and there. I would say that MCG was a good experience, but they seemed to be a little hesitant to engage us in conversation, and seemed to pretty much let us do our own thing. We had to approach the staff multiple times to enquire about procedures. It's almost like they didn't know how to act around us. We had a lot of previous medical experience in our class because the prereq for Army nursing school is that you have to be a combat medic and we had lots of students with combat experience from Iraq and Afghanistan so we got the impression that this made them feel uncomfortable. Maybe it will be different for you. My rotations at Eisenhower were awesome!. The Capts, and Lt's repeatedly drilled us and were absolutely relentless. Plenty of one-on-one counseling and tons of instruction. We had no choice but to do everything by the numbers correctly and were called out if our performance lacked. This is the kind of intensity that nursing students need, that I didnt get at MCG. Maybe you will have a different experience.

I work at MCCG as an nurse extern III and I attend Macon State College's nursing program (last semester). MCCG (medical center of central georgia) is a great place. The staff RN/LPN/Techs are great; of course different floors have its issues but thats life. The nurses are eager to show you procedures and allow you to assist. I think you will enjoy it. Show that you want to learn, offer assistance, etc and you will be fine. Just don't try to be a "know it all".....that kind of mindset has been the downfall of several students.
On another note I went to GCSU for my bachelor's degree in marketing, the drive from Milledgeville to Macon isn't that bad; you'll get use to it. Also I think that you will probably get to see a whole lot more at MCCG vs ORMC; the pt acuity level is higher and its a teaching hospital.
Think positive....hope you have a great experience

I did my preceptorship in the emergency room at mccg. I survived 3 months, it wasn't bad. My preceptor was very nice to work with and a good teacher. Some nurses have attitudes with students or just don't want to take the time to teach you something, just stay clear of them and you'll be fine.
I was thinking about getting a job as a nurse extern at mccg. But first I was thinking about doing it at oconee or then transferring. Eventually I hope to get a job at fayette community hospital before i graduate. Would you recommend working at MCCG?
I would recommend working @ MCCG. I am planning to apply for ICU positions there and at some hospitals in ATL. I haven't heard anything about fayette community hospital but I will have to research it and see how far the drive would be from 85N(atlanta towards 400) or 75S (macon).

I'm thinking about applying for the nurse extern position at MCCG. What are the qualifications? Was it a good experience for you. What have you heard to be the best departments to work as a nurse extern in?
