Hello all, I am wondering if there is anyone here who are attending either Oakland Community or Macomb Community College. I am trying to decide which one to go to, so anyone who wants to share their experience, positive or negative, I think that would be helpful. I am most interested in if you feel the instructors are of a good quality where you go, and if you feel you are getting a good education. Thank you.
Just wanted to share some helpful information I received this week from MCC. I went to the nursing seminar and they told us the numbers from the students that were excepted into the program this fall. Hesi exam average was 87 but the high was 100 and the low was 84. For GPA the average was 3.8 but with a high of 4.0 and a low of 3.35. They had 500 applicants and took 125. They also said that you could have a 4.0 but score low on the Hesi and not get excepted. They said both are very important and weigh the same as far as the decision. So this was fairly good news concidering some of the rumors we all have been hearing about them only excepting 4.0 students. I guess it really all depends on who you are up againist.
All this makes me get very frustrated because I want to do this soooo bad, but everytime I am on campus and see a nursing student it just pushes me to try harder.
You should be just fine with a 3.9, you just need to score high on the Hesi exam because that is still 50% of what they go by. I have 3 classes right now, BIO 1000, BIO 1400, and Psyc 1010. I took the BIO 1000 because they changed the Microbiology class and you need to have BIO before you can take that class. I am going to be taking anatomy next semester. Are you taking any other classes now? They say you should only take anatomy because it is so demanding. Good luck with everything.![]()

There havn't been any changes to the requirements for the microbiology courses that I'm aware of . You needed biology as a prereq to taking microbiology previously. You don't need biology as a prereq to taking pathogenic microbiology. If you are planning on getting a BSN you need regular biology but if you only want the associate's degree it's not required.
Take anatomy with Prof Ragland if you can, she is a great professor!
The changes that they have made for Microbiology is that you can no longer choose between Pathogenic 2730 or General 2400. You have to take 2400 which requires BIO 1000. That is what I meant about the changes, sorry if I confused you. Thanks for the tip on the professor. Have you already taken Micro?

Who told you that you can no longer take pathogenic microbiology? It isn't updated in the information on the school's website for the nursing school requirements? A gal in my comparative religion's course tried to tell me that everyone had to take regular biology now too, but a week later she found out that was ONLY if you are pursuing a bachelors degree, any other university you would transfer to for a bachelor's program would require the basic biology course. Are the changes you are referring to for NEXT year's applicants? When I look at the paperwork I got for 2007 and on the website there is no mention at all of the changes you are referring to.

I really don't remember the names of the people who conducted the seminar. MCC has just changed this and said that the website is not updated yet but it is for anyone who is applying in 2007. I had a 2007 packet prior to going to this nursing seminar that had the other information in it that you are refering to, but at the nursing seminar on AUG 31 they gave us the new updated version of the 2007 packet. Like I said before if you have taken pathogenic micro or 2310 anatomy prior to MCC changing the pre-reqs then the nursing department will waive it and you will be fine. I suggest that you call the counseling department and ask them for the updated info. or I can send you the new packet through email.

I'd really like to know how they think they can change the prereqs like that without posting it on their website or including it in the 2007 admission packets that were already passed out (or gee, maybe making it KNOWN to everyone before classes actually started this fall!)? Everyone's already got their courses mapped out for this year and next. I can't fit in regular biology and micro before next fall. I've only got to take micro after this anatomy class I am currently in and I will have all the prereqs done. If this info is really correct I am soooooooooooooo not happy ! Your new packet shows that pathogenic micro is really not accepted for the microbiology class any longer? That totally stinks
.

Well if you only have micro to take, you don't need to have Micro prior to starting the nursing program. You can take BIO 1000 this winter semester and take the Micro either in spring or even in the fall. It is NOT required to be done prior to being excepted into the nursing program or prior to starting the nursing program. The the new packet they have it listed as a class in your first semester of nursing classes. They said it is just easier to have it out of the way before you start nursing classes because the nursing classes are pretty demanding.
Sorry about having to give you this crappy info. but I think you should still be fine. I am not taking my anatomy class until winter so I will either have to take Micro with it or take it in the spring. I think I will take it in the spring though because I want to have anatomy by itself.
Hey Leigh, Sorry it took me so long to respond (I have been a busy girl) I did get in on my first attempt (3.91 GPA- 91 HESI) I honestly do not recall the vocab words being all that hard. They were (from what I remember) words given in a sentence and then you need to choose what the word means from 4 or 5 options. If you are good with words and their meanings, you will be fine:specs:.
That sucks that Macomb is changing the pre-reqs for the nursing program, but this is not the first time they did this. Being in the program right now, I think that the path. micro would be more useful b/c it breaks down the diseases bacteria and viruses can cause. But..................
Good Luck to you!!

Did you just start the program? How do you like it? I am planning on applying at MCC and then going to OCC to finish up some classes they want you to have. Once you finish your pre-reqs there you are put on the waiting list and when your name is called it's your turn!:wink2: About the HESI I have the study guide coming I ordered it online. I have looked over it at the learning center and have taken some of the practice math tests and they seemed fairly easy. I have heard the vocab. is where everyone seems to have problems. Do you remember if the vocab was medical terms? Also did you get into the program on your first attempt? Congrats, and Good Luck with the program!!
