Mayo Clinic Summer iii Externship 2020

Nursing Students General Students

Published

Hello! I wanted to create this post to communicate with others that are applying for Mayo Clinic's Summer iii externship. I saw that there were similar posts for previous years, and I would love to get to know others that are applying! Look forward to hearing from you all ?

I'm so anxious too! Every time I get an email I get nervous!!! In the meantime while we're waiting what kind of nurses do ya'll wanna be?? I'm interested in ER!

I’m nervous too! I’m interested in ER, burn ICU, and wound care.

Does anyone gave CNA experience? I don’t really have any experience outside of clinicals and looking from past years people like me haven’t made it past the first cut. But we will see!

I honestly have no idea, which is one of the reasons I would be so grateful for this opportunity! I do have some interest in peds (possibly PICU, transplant, etc.), but overall I am very unsure.

I don't have any CNA experience either, and I noticed the same thing regarding those who made it vs. didn't, so that definitely makes me nervous. Fingers crossed that isn't one of the main factors they take into consideration! @lmn1428

Burn ICU sounds cool! I didn't know it got so specific haha. I have CNA experience but I think they look a lot at the short answer question. I don't know overall though!

I am interested in labor and delivery, critical care, and ER!

I received my CNA certification in June, but have not had a chance to work! I didn't know that was a common trend. That makes it even more nerve wracking! I know they place a huge emphasis on the essay and then look at your resume and base it off of a point system (involvement, leadership, GPA etc.). I am really trying to keep a positive mind, but be realistic too!

When do you guys think we will know? Also, is it alphabetical order?

I think I’m learning more towards specialties like psych and neuro, but I’m honestly open to anything! I don’t have any CNA experience, so I’m a bit nervous about the results. From what I’ve heard, we might hear back in the next few days (my gut is telling me Wednesday) for the first round. The second round is usually Feb 14th or 15th. Wishing y’all the best!

Yeah, my gut is telling me Wednesday too! I know they send emails in alphabetical order so I won’t be one of the firsts to know. I’m guessing second round will find out the 14th since it’s a Friday.

And yeah, I love wounds so thinking I may like burn ICU. I don’t think Mayo has one but we have a good burn center at the hospital I’m an extern at right now and they’re gonna let me shadow there in March.

Well sounds like not many many of us have experience as a CNA so hopefully that’s a common thing for applicants.

Anxious, anxious, anxious!

I'm interested in Cardiovascular and Neurovascular ICU! I have a CNA certification but have not utilized it in the workplace yet. I have had an internship at a medium-security prison as a correctional student nurse intern though, super cool being able to see nursing in a different setting. I have two friends that were Summer III's last year and from what they told me, the essay is the HUGE deciding factor! Good look guys!

I feel like all I do now is check my email and application status haha!

I would love pediatrics, NICU, or the ER! I don't have any CNA experience either, but I'm hoping that won't be a huge deal for picking candidates. From what I heard in the past, they look more at the essays in the second round because there are so many initial applicants!

That makes so much more sense! So initially it is more resume based? While second round is the essay, since they only have to read 100 of them.

I am checking my email too! Tomorrow, I have community clinical all day so I will keep it on me, and hopefully feel the buzz from this forum or my email haha.
