I hope the old proverbs come real.

You know who you are.

The mysterious, "I am sick so I need to call out in two consecutive days in a row" people.

Mysteriously you guys just appear out of nowhere and can tell when you'll be better and how long you'll be sick for. And strangely, it happens on the weekends.

So as the saying goes,

I hope that your "words" come real for you. ?

As you guys can tell, I'm just ranting due to a certain nurse calling out sick.

I'm a male nurse by the way. I think proper ethics when it comes to work-life balance and also conditioning your own self during your off-days is as important as how you conduct your behavior on the unit.

It has been said, "A leader is one who saw the inevitable and got out in front of it".

Back in '03, after working at the medical center for about six months, I read some writing on the wall and went from working straight days to straight MNs. The medical center went from being owned by a diocese to be sold to a for-profit organization. Chaos, havoc, and mass exodus followed.

Back in those days, nurses on call would be paid $70 for a call out and would make their usual pay, or if they were working overtime, time and a half. There were ALWAYS call offs on the weekend.

I went to the director of the psych division and offered to work every weekend for an additional $70 on my paycheck. It was a win/win situation and the director accepted my offer.

Three months later, the weekend option program was implemented. When the entire medical center went to 12 hour shifts, I was rewarded the unit and nights of my choosing at time and a half of my base salary.

I may be bragging a bit, but please allow my situation to serve as an example to use others' weaknesses to your advantage; if another creates a hole, be the one who foresees it and knows how to plug it.

And know this: I didn't get my way by being a brown-noser. Administrators tend to avoid me, but do see that I am a necessary means to an end.

I'm just going to "let it go," and enjoy the extra hours. Actually thinking about going to the director for permission to pick up all the "extra shifts" certain nurses cause for the entire unit.

One of these days, I would find myself in that position where I am one of the core members of the unit.

No doubt I'll run a tight ship when that happens Davey. It's not good for staff morale, nor for the security for the patients.

We used to have a saying, buy 1, get 5 free. I am dead serious. I never had the guts to try it, but have known people to do so.

I have to slightly disagree with your statement of "tight ship... not good for staff morale". I run a tight ship and those who are sympatico with working toward the goal of good patient care give and get positive feedback. Those who are not assisting in the goal are given reality orientation. If they continue on their merry incompetent way, they are worked around and left to paint themselves into a corner.
