Hi i'm Nicole i have been a med/surg nurse for 2 yrs. I would like to go back to school but i am having trouble gathering information which is discouraging me to go back. no website has helped. Here is my question:
--- is there a website that lists in detail different masters programs for nursing that i can scan through to see what i would be interested in? lets say i am interested in masters in nursing psych /nurse practitioner, is there a website that lists what a psych nurse practitioner is responsible for? how do i go back for my masters if i have no idea what i am getting my masters in and what the position entails!!?!?!?! every time i type into google anything regarding "masters in nursing" a bunch of colleges come up but nothing lists information about the position such as what i would be doing as a nurse practioner of psych or if i got a masters but not an np positon.
why am i finding it impossible to find a website that lists this information? if anyone has suggestions of who to talk or good websites please let me know! thank you

The best way to find out what type
Of masters program is for you is by your RN experience.
If you are interested in potentially pursuing a PMHNP then think about switching to a position as a psych RN to gain some experience in that field. You can also find masters prepared nurses to shadow for a day or however long and see if you have any interest in what they do! Networking and making connections (interviewing, shadowing etc) will help you expand your knowledge base of your msn options as well as further your career during and post your Masters. If you are not sure what you would like to pursue then get some more rn experience until you find an area/specialty you would like further education in.

I am literally surprised you can''t find a breakdown of the different specialties anywhere on the internet. Even here the topic regarding differing specialties has come up dozens of times. Wikipedia even has a break down on their NP page. Find non-clincal master specialties is just as easy.
I don't know about you but I had a good idea regarding how an NP functions before I even went back for school and I didn't need a website to educate me. How many pre-med students do you know that need a website to educate them on what a physician, specialty or not, does? Sorry if this is coming as harsh but I see posts here all the time asking for BASIC information after describing why they want to become a NP or pursue advanced practice nursing. It just confuses me on how/why a person would want to go back to school when they don't even know what the advanced practice role entails.
Look a little harder, in 5 seconds of google I found what you were looking for.
Thank you very much, this was just an idea i am throwing around just trying to gain a little feedback before i start to really sit down and reasearch different areas, i appreciate youre response and effort to help thank you very very much! Your post was very helpful!

Check out the APNA (American Psychiatric Nurses Association) website as well as AANP (American Association of Nurse Practitioners). ANCC may also have some links.
You will find lots of info and answers. Good Luck!
