Master's degree if you don't want to leave bedside nursing

Published

I really would like to pursue a master's degree, primarily for personal fulfillment. However, I can't figure out what path to go that wouldn't direct me away from bedside nursing. I like what I do now. Are there any master's degree paths that would not take you completely away from bedside care? I am just starting to look into this.

I worked several years at the bedside with my MSN in Education. It complemented my role in Peds ICU quite well. I was happy with that choice. Also, we had 3-4 MSN nurses working bedside.

I'm doing mine at WGU for leadership. I would like to check out staff development one day and just want the degree as a back up in case I suddenly get injured or a really neat opportunity becomes available.

I would like to stay at the bedside for as long as I can tolerate and where I work, opportunities exist where you can do unit educator or supervisor and work one day on the floor and the rest as educator/supervisor.

It will also help with the clinical ladder too.
