Specializes in Med-Surg.

Hi all,

I need some advice. I want to relocate from NY to MA but I need to know more about where I am going. My background is in Medsurg and and currently I work for a Home Care Company in NY-CHAA. My goal is to obtain my Masters in Nursing education but I am also interested in Case Management. Can someone guide me in the right direction? I need a quiet neighborhood preferably one with low car insurance rates and something where I can be close to the hospital/facility. I really need a change because I lost my mother early this year and it has been really tough staying in NY alone. I have family in MA. But I do not necessarily want to live in Fall River I want a nicer place and a nice facility with nice people. I know it will not be perfect but anything to get out of this overcrowded city where I still feel isolated would be nice.

You definitely don't want to live in Fall River if you want a nice place... I wouldn't exactly call it quiet either. I live in Boston, I know nothing about the hospitals in that area of the state.

Hi KelRN215,

I am graduating in May with my BSN and moving to Boston. I have seen your posts on many of the Boston threads and I was wondering if you could answer a few questions for me. I've seen a lot of posts about how it is really hard for a new graduate to get a job in Boston. Has this changed at all? When is the best time for new grads to apply for jobs? I've also read some hospitals do not even hire new graduates. Is this also true? I would really appreciate any information you would like to share with me! I've been reading a lot of the posts about new graduates trying to get their first job in Boston and it is been very discouraging.

You should start applying in January if you hope to obtain a new grad position. The jobs will all be gone by March. It is difficult to get a new grad job in Boston proper without connections, but not impossible. Are you in school in the Boston area? If so, your best bet would be to try to get your preceptorship on a floor that you would like to work on.

Thank you for your response! Unfortunately, I go to school in Alabama. I've been looking online but I am having some difficulty finding information about new graduate programs in the Boston area. Do you know of any hospitals who have new graduate programs?

It depends on the year. All of the big Boston Hospitals (Mass General, The Brigham, Beth Israel, Tufts, Boston Medical Center, Children's Hospital) have them at some point or another. I don't know where has them currently.

What makes you certain you want to move to Boston after you graduate? We have a lot of nursing schools up here, a lot of the new grad positions will go to students who have done clinicals at these hospitals or worked as CNAs at them.

Seeing all of the posts definitely makes me second guess coming to Boston but I don't have much of a choice. My fiancé is working in Boston. That's why I'm trying to find out as much information as I can before I get up there and to make sure I give myself the most opportunities as possible.
