Maryville nursing program

Published

I WOULD LIKE TO HAVE ANY THOUGHTS ON MARYVILLE'S BURSING PROGRAM. I START IN OCTOBER TO START MY PRE-REQ'S AND WOULD LIKE TO HAVE ANY SUGGESTIONS OR COMMENTS ABOUT THE PROGRAM. THANK YOU IN ADVANCE FOR YOUR COMMENTS.:yeah::confused:;):)

Is it where they give credit for prior life experiences? I haven't really heard how that program works.

Yes it is called the Prior Life Assessment..from what I can gather from the website , you take a course and then put together a portfolio and based on that a academic board will review it and determine how many credit hours you have earned through your work and life experiences ..you can get up to 60 hours and then you would just have to pay a fee of $ 40 per assessed hour. From what I have read it is only for WEC enrollees. It's goal to to help older students reach their goal of a degree . It sounds exciting.. I was just curious if anyone has/had used it and what the average person earned from their experiences?

oh okay...so then if you get say 20 credit hours towards this- does that cut off some of your classes? obviously not the pre reqs, right? I wonder what it would shave off as far as your classes.....

From my understanding it can go towards pre-reqs as well..say if you have previous medical experience that knowledge could be assessed and applied towards your credit hours. It would cut out classes and credit hours! And you could get your degree quicker!

well let me know how the meeting goes tomorrow, I pm'd u my email address too

So, I just talked to the advisor a couple days ago. He said they do give priority to people with previous Maryville credits- atleast 20 credit hours, minimum. I'm not sure why he told me differently before but oh well. Seeing as how I only need 1 more class before nursing courses he said unless I take several electives to get to the 20 credit hours, getting accepted would be "a long-shot at best". I do have a pretty decent GPA but he really stressed the 20 credits at Maryville or looking at a different school. Ugh! I really don't want to waste money on classes that I don't need. So, looks like i'll be going with UMSL (if I get in) or a community college. I have almost all of my prereqs done at UMSL so I think it shouldn't be a problem getting in there. I'm setting up a meeting with their advisor soon though. I'm so frustrated right now!

Hi...just wanted to let you all know a perspective about Maryville WEC bsn that's not so shiny. About every week at Maryville, there is a chance to fail out, and we usually do lose at least one or two students. You could be the best student with the highest GPA, and still be dropped in an instant if you don't pass a demo, a quiz, etc, etc. if you are a student at Maryville, you will get tired of hearing the words "fail." After a year in, all the money and time and energy I invested, they dropped me with the failure of one demo. We also have mothers of young children leaving the program in heards now...because the promised time factor with our family goes out the window when you hit one year. The summer semester of the first year consumes your life. I'm not saying that other schools won't, but I'm speaking from personal, current experience. Our morale is VERY low right now, and students are frustrated. Maryville is an excellent program, IF they let you graduate...and it can be hard to predict who will.

Are you looking to go elsewhere? All of your credits will transfer? right? I am currently enrolled in Maryville's WEC pre-nursing..and I am looking to continue my education elsewhere..due to financial and time constraints! When I tried to withdraw from the fall semester so that I could focus on enrolling somewhere else I was persuaded out of withdrawal..but, I am still looking into other options!

They lose 1-2 people every week? Or do you mean every semester? At that weekly rate, no one will be left to graduate:( I wonder if they've gotten tough because their NCLEX pass rate was at its lowest 2 years ago, but last years was the best in the area.

Will you be allowed to re-enter the program next year? I am so sorry you have to go through this - it sounds like a true nightmare. I start the program in the fall as it is the only do-able option for my schedule and location. I hope you can get back in and finish the program!! Again, I'm so sorry you have to deal with this - especially after a year in. It just doesn't seem fair.

Re MOnurse:

It depends on what we are doing academically with how many we lose. With our pharmacology skills we probably lost about 5 students. With our sterile field demos we lost about 6. Earlier losses were probably more like 1-2 per semester. But the fail at any time in the program is what is most concerning about Maryville.

Fellow Nursing Students,

I posted a prior report about Maryville's WEC. While I might have the most positive experiences (which I personally have) vs. someone else who might not be, remember that it is all subjective information. There are some of us in our program right now who are at the top of our game, and others who are struggling. Don't forget about all those who are somewhere in between. This will forever be the continuum until we all graduate (by the grace of God). You could post this same question about all the schools in this particular area, and I'm sure you would get a horror story or two about each one. Nursing school is no amusement park ride. It takes time, dedication, effort, countless hours of studying, tears, and finding something within yourself that you thought was never there. Failure can happen to the best of us. Is it necessarily the fault of the institution in which we attend? Who's to say? I can't speak for anyone on this forum, but all the times I have failed at something, I'm pretty darn sure some of the fault was mine. But, it is all perpective. So, don't take my advice or anyone elses. Just take your dream of being a nurse and run with it! If it is meant to be, it will be!

Thanks for your perspective, UMSLalum. I talked with a STLCC nursing student a while back, and it is the same thing there. People wait to get their spot in that program for years, and if they don't pass a skill or a test, they are also dropped. She said they lose several people a semester as well.

I know I will be an absolute basket case before these pass/fail demonstrations, but I'm that way anyway.
