Hi! Any Marquette hopefuls this app. cycle? I'm a little ahead of the game here but am too excited not to be =0) I'm applying to the CNM track!
Congratulations to everyone who has been accepted already! I am one of the hopefuls who hasn't heard back yet and I'm extremely nervous!! Nursing is by far the career I am most passionate about pursuing, having been a patient with a chronic condition myself for most of my life. I'm a senior at UW Madison, graduating this May with a B.A. in Psychology. I have worked as a CNA at both a Medical and Rehab center and a CBRF Assisted Living facility. I have also been volunteering at a local hospital in Madison for the past 2 years and have been a member of two committees in the Health Occupations Students of America org on campus. My undergrad GPA so far is a 3.29, and will hopefully be well over a 3.3 by the time this semester finishes. I also have been feeling a little discouraged by the application process. :/ These programs have definitely become so much more competitive!
I graduated this past December with a 3.7 in Biology. I worked as a medical admin assistant, interned/volunteered with hospice, worked as a public health TA, volunteer-taught GED science classes, got my CNA and work as one, volunteered at hospital and as a grief group counselor. I sent in 5 letters of rec instead of 3. I've been bustin my butt to get in and started my application last Jan lol.
Marq was the only school I applied to though so I was extremely nervous as a lot of my friends that are also qualified have gotten rejected from a lot of grad schools lately. idk I think you can try to prepare yourself as well as possible but I honestly think it's chance sometimes!!!!!!
You really are very qualified, vchri481! you did get accepted?
I wish my GPA was higher..I had a rough first semester my freshman year because I started off pre-med and was taking calculus along with other difficult classes. I quickly realized that becoming a doctor was not the lifestyle I wanted and as soon as I switched to pre-nursing classes I was much happier and began doing much better. I really hope I have a shot at the second wave of acceptances!
Everyone sounds like great candidates...so hang in there!!! Just thought I'd let everyone know that I think I will be accepting my offer of admission to VCU, so this will open up a spot on the waitlist (or next wave, not sure how they do it) at Marquette. I have a feeling that for a lot of competitive grad-nursing programs this is the case since many people apply to several programs. So again, stay hopeful, it's not over yet!! And good luck to everyone in pursuing your dreams :)
I love the support on here!
I'm not feeling too optimistic at this point and am busying myself with alternate, "just in case" plans. I know the exact weak point of my application, however, and kind of applied this year to "test the waters" before spending a ton on app. fees for all of the schools. Nevertheless, I am anxiously awaiting the second round of decisions and wishing everyone the best of luck in their waits and choices =)
There's definitely going to be a lot more rounds out so don't worry gals!
uwbadger12--Yes I did get accepted. And I totally agree with your other statement. I wanted pre-med for a while and then decided I didn't want such a crazy demanding schedule/life! NP is perfect--well enough but not too much! I got into it because my primary is a NP and she was always just so fantastic!
You're super close to me! I did my undergrad at Stevens Point and am still here now! Love Wisco :)
I know the program is quite expensive! However, I talked to a guy who is currently in the program and he told me that it is nearly impossible because of scheduling to continue studying full-time during the MSN phase. I am actually relieved about this. I know it will take longer, but we will get more experience that way and be able to stretch out the cost a little more. He also told me that almost everyone got the specialty they wanted, though some of the people who wanted to be midwives had to switch (apparently it's very popular and there just aren't enough spots). Also, the people who did peds had a hard time finding employment as RNs during the MSN phase because there are only a couple pediatric hospitals in the area, and the people just jockey around the different positions.

I'm in Dallas currently. I don't think anyone can compete with orphan-care girl...
