There is nothing wrong with male nurses, as there is nothing wrong with female Dr.'s. I'm sure the whole stigma thing comes from when women couldn't go to college, and only worked to aid the Dr.
We are, or should be, way past that era!
I guess, eventually, someone with a problem with it will come up with a "politically correct" name to suit both genders as with the stewardess to flight attendant name change! :chuckle
Let me just say that male nurses are great! My sexy bf is one, ex-police officer, and there is NOTHING feminine about him! He, and the other males I have worked with, are extremely intelligent, caring and true assets to their depts. Keep up the good work guys! :)
Another canidate nurse here waiting to get signed up
I'm 43 and just finishing my pre-nursing classes (just microB to go). After years in the corporate world and that last 10 in Dot Coms, I got tired of helping businesses as opposed to helping people. When I decided to pursue my RN, the reactions were mixed, but mostly supportative. I DO think it helps that I'm in California where there are fewer stigmas associated with ... everything. My wife was mixed, but supportative. In-laws wonder why I need a new career and don't just "get a normal job". My son (15) was concerned with the the gay image. My daughter (21) was totally supportative. My sister thought it was great.
But most importantly, I think it's fantastic!
Hey dont worry about what others think about your career choice. If this is what you wanna do then go for it! Im a male nursing student and there aint a gay bone in my body. I think subconsciencely im in it to meet the ladies. I love all you females out there!!!!!
