male nurses in OB

Published

do you think that it is kosher for a male to work in OB?

When I'm screaming at the top of my lungs for an epi I could care less if it's a female or male nurse I'm yelling at! lol

I've had 5 babies and 5 different GPs at my deliveries. Three males and 2 females. I much preferred the females. I have never had a male nurse.

I would never have a male GP again, though I would never have another baby either.

It's weird because I work with males and have no problem at all with how they work. BUT, I would never want a male nurse doing any personal care on me.

I know it doesn't sound fair, but it how I feel.

Specializes in ICU, CVICU.

yes! As long as you are tough enough to not take it personally if a patient wants a female nurse. Oh....and you never ever EVER say "Come on..it's not that bad"

:)

and mabey if a patient seems uncomfortable say something like if you would prefer i could get a female nurse

I don't see any difference with a male nurse being in and OB nurse thatn any other type of nurse. Male nurses give female patients baths and put in foley caths. The only problem would be if the patient had a problem with

a male nurse. SIMILARILY, when I went for my first prenatal checkup and while lying on the examine table found out that my doctors new partner who was going to do my exam was of a different race , well I

did have a difficult time with this and wished I had been prepared ahead of

time. Some times women will pick a female doctor because they are more comfortable with them, some people may pick a doctor with their same

beliefs..this is freedom of choice and we should not take that away from our patients.

Thanks for the imput. we are starting up with this section and I wanted to see some of the challanges that i would have to deal with and how to deal with them.

that is true i guess I would not care who was there to help me out either.

good to consider. pt rights no matter what.

How would you have "prepared ahead of time"? Do you do something special or ritual?

equal opertunity. good point. I still feel that that is a female speciffic area and best handled by females. but my perceptions will probably change after doing the ob rotation in Nursing school next. thanks for the input.

The best OB department I have ever seen was one that hired only women who had previously given birth. There was a long waiting list of nurses and aides who wanted to work there, and patient satisfaction was extremely high. Almost no one ever resigned unless her husband took another job out of town, or she decided she wanted to retire. Advanced degrees were plentiful as the nurses were allowed to work part-time to accommodate their class schedules.

One hard and fast rule, however: "No males need apply." Discrimination? Well, who even thought that way in those days? Head nurses ran their departments as they saw fit, and as long as patient care was top priority, everyone was happy.

That reminds me of a quote... "Do you know what a racist calls black Ph.d.'s? ..... Ni**ers.. No matter how good you are..what your qualifications are...b/c of your race/sex you will never be good enough. Sad we still live in those times.
