Male Nurse and OB/GYN ? Is this okay ?

Published

I am a Male student nurse . Is it okay for Male Nurse to specilize OB/GYN ?

How Patients feel about it ?

Will it be difficult to find job and patient ?

Will male nurse be marginalized being ob/gyn ?

I am very curious ...please give some feedback

Perhaps you could tell us a little more about why you want to specialize in OB/GYN?

There are MANY male MDs who are OBGYNs - women docs don't dominate that specialty in medicine...should nursing be any different?

IMHO, perhaps a male obgyn nurse would have a little bit of uphill battle, but if there's something admin, fellow staff, and pts love, its competence - perhaps above all other things.

If you feel you have the potential to be a great obgyn nurse - please, do it!

Specializes in OB.

I say go for it!!!

I work with two womderful male nurses in L&D. 95% of the time there is not and issue, like others have said there are lots of male OBGYN MDs out there. I think doing some of the exams and such may be a littleuncomfortable at times, but as long as you are respectful and ask permission from the pt I see no problem. I love both of these RN's and it is really nice to have a male around sometimes when you need some extra muscles. One of these men bonds particularlly well with the very young teens that come through (I guess he is like a father figure to them), he has made a huge impact on many of there lives.

Good Luck!

Specializes in Specializes in L/D, newborn, GYN, LTC, Dialysis.

It's more than "ok".....it's great. I have worked with and been the patient of male Ob nurses they were excellent! If this is what you want, go for it.

Specializes in RN Education, OB, ED, Administration.

I have questions about this though... Our male OB's will not examine a patient without a nurse at the bedside for liability reasons. How does a male nurse handle this? Wouldn't the same issues be there? It would be difficult for a nurse to find another nurse to be at the bedside for every exam. ;o) Just curious.

Good points........

You will find many facilities that have males in OB/GYN. Of course there is NOTHING wrong with it. There have been many threads about that: I think on this site. Check the archives.

I have heard much positive feedback on males in OB/GYN. if that's your genuine interest, go for it.

Start with the notion that there do NOT have to be lots of exams during a labor. The fewer the better.
