Male nurse midwife

Is it a good choice for a male nurse to specialize in midwifery?

Specializes in Geriatrics, Dialysis.

If that is where your interests lie, why not? I am female and though I didn't opt for a midwife [had a traditional hospital birthing] my doctor was male and that wasn't a concern for me at all.

Specializes in CNM.

If you are passionate about providing women with the midwifery model of care, then I think you should go for it! I have personally met a male nurse-midwife. He's been a regional representative for ACNM and he seems to be very well loved. I'm sure if you search for the regional representatives, you can find them and contact the male nurse-midwife about practicing as a nurse-midwife. Or if you can find a male nurse-midwife to contact, that would be the best route to go about finding out if this is something you want to do. They can give you a more insightful look as to the practices and acceptance of male nurse-midwives. I do know there are women that prefer males as care providers and there are women that prefer women as care providers. However, I think your actions as a midwife will speak louder than your gender ever will. There are a lot of women who want midwifery care, and they will come to you if you practice good midwifery care no matter your gender because your reputation as a midwife will precede you!

I don't see how you being a male is an issue. I love my male OB/GYN! Yes, some women don't want a male down there, but some like myself could care less. It's about the care they provide, not their gender.

Specializes in Medical ICU and Unique Pathogens.

Me and my fellow nurse friend are in a competition to see who can get the most letters associated with their name and sometimes and I stop and think D-O-U-L-A sure would give me commanding lead.
