making up missing areas

Published

Hi everyone, this is my first post although I have been watching the forum for some time now. I felt it's about time I joined in.

I am qualifying with a diploma and BSc in adult nursing in 8 weeks and would like to move to the US a couple of years from now (I've noticed from the threads it takes about 12-18 months). However, having read the threads I know I will need to do some extra work in mental health, peds and maternity, but I was wondering how much time I need to make up and is it a specific module I need to do?? I'm still at uni so I can discuss this with my tutor, but I'm not sure what to ask for, i.e. is it a specific amount of hours??? Also, can I sit NCLEX before having these hours made up or is it after??

I did 2 mental health nursing placements in 1st year totalling about 360 hours, will this help on the mental health part??

sorry for the questions, but it seems the one area I can't find much information about, also, to the nurses already in the US, how did you guys do it??

I don't mind hard work, as this is how life works, but any help you can give is appreciated.

Regards

Sandra

1. The needed hours must be done before you will be given permission to sit for the NCLEX exam.

2. NCLEX-RN is the final step of the licensing process; when you are given permission to sit for the exam, it means that you meet all of the educational requirements for the RN title in that state.

3. The coursework must be done in an approved school of nursing with the courses appearing on your transcripts, or on a separate transcript. Having just a tutor will not qualify.

4. You can make up the hours usually in an 8 week module for each area.

Thanks Suzanne, I'll start looking into it now!!

O grady peyton now do a special foundation programme for people who qualified after the year 2000 for people deficient in the hours soooo ring them up :) they had an ad in the nursing standard about it today!!

I wanted to quote you but ended up editing

Anyway I just wanted to say read the contract very carefully especially the contract hours, you need to be fully informed before you sign anything.

yes, i doubt these courses will be free

Thanks for the advice guys, tbh I never sign anything without going through it with a fine toothcomb, however, if it's the only way forward OGP may know they have a captive audience. Tina, did you have any joy when you called them???
