Go to this link and observe that most of the RNs are making >$100K/year, some much more. These are California Department of Corrections RNs.

The Sacramento area is not a place bad to work, many of the nurses are a part of the Bay Area unions and/or are impacted by Bay Area market forces which artificially increases their compensation package while the area remains at a relatively lower cost-of-living.
You just have to like living in the Sacramento Area, I did not.

I lived in Davis when I was a teen. I knew people that had to commute to Sacramento for work, but it's not that far away. There are other suburbs in the Sacramento area that are just as nice, and wouldn't mind moving to if I found a job in the Sacramento area. Davis is expensive though so it may not be possible to move back there.
Note that the Department of Corrections has facilities all over the sate. Their website mentions premium pay for those working in several prisons.
