maimonides medical center/ Changing jobs after only a few months

Published

Hi,

Does anyone have any info on maimonides?I have an interview scheduled for July 3rd for their ventilator unit. Nurse patient ratio is suppose to be 1:4. Currently work on a geriatrics floor at NYHQ. Realize I'm not learning much. Pretty much like being in a nursing home. So, after 4 months I'm ready to go. Any advice on where to go from here?

Maimo is great! The work environment is very down to earth but efficient. The hospital is extremely busy. I use to work in the ED and its is i believe the 2nd busiest in the state of something. The L&D unit is also busy. It is a great teaching hospital and you will learn soo much. It is located in a very Jewish community and the hospital is Kosher and follows many Jewish practices. The hospital is unlike others in a good way. There was also a book written about it recently. GL with your interview.

I worked at Maimonides. I think I know what floor you are talking about although I didnt know they were calling it a specific vent unit. I worked med-surg and we had tons of vents on the floors (too many sometimes!!) It is a good hospital though, always busy, sometimes short staffed, but I guess that is all around! Good luck!

thanks for the replies so far. I appreciate it. It's supposedly a new unit. I don't even know if it's up and running yet. I just want to be somewhere where i'm gonna learn. I'm not learning anything really at NYHQ. Probably cuz of the floor that I'm on.

You definitely will learn alot at Maimo!

That's good to hear. Where I currently work. Nurses don't even do IVs. I swear I was doing more stuff in clinicals than now that I'm on the floor. Feel like I'm just pushing meds. No critical thinking and all that. I don't want to become a lazy nurse like most of the nurses on my floor.

Specializes in ICU, ER, Trauma.

I can assure you what you describe is hospital-wide and not just on your floor. Have done agency per-diem work there and found it to be quite strange of a place (trying to put it mildly). After my 7th shift there, I realized it wasn't me & told the agency I won't set foot in the place ever again. I don't know what it is like for staff (although I did here them constantly complaining), but with agency work, I felt my license was on the line every time I was there. They are the most apathetic bunch of folks I have ever encountered.

Good Luck with your job interview. Hope you get the job and find somewhere where you can flourish.

Thanks whoofers. that seems to be the general consensus i'm getting from a few people so far. nyhq isn't all it's cracked up to be. I think most people stay on my floor cuz it's not as heavy as the others and the nurse manager is very flexible. But I want to learn and it's obvious it ain't gonna happen here.
