Magnet status

Published

So I am trying to find a comprehensive list of minimum qualifications to get magnet status.

I currently work at a magnet hospital and I have heard many rumors that we will be losing our status based on the high turnover rate we have had of RN's leaving. I am trying to determine if this is true or not.

So I have researched a little and haven't seen a "check list", if you will, of items that can cause you to gain or lose your status.

Does anyone know of a resource that might show the information?

Thank you

There is no checklist. Obtaining Magnet status is more complex than that. The application for initial or recertification is pretty complex and covers many areas that are meant to demonstrate objectives in several different areas including nurse leadership, research and innovation, exemplary practice, and structural empowerment.

One of the measures, which I think falls under "structural empowerment" is unit-level nurse satisfaction. I don't know how it's quantified, but I know it's more complex than simply "retain >90% of nursing staff on an annual basis" or something to that effect.

Look on the ANCC's website for a lot of Magnet info if you haven't already.

Your Magnet coordinator should be able to provide you with that information as well.

The recertification process will include an intense review of many different types of data. High turnover is a clear and obvious indicator of greater problems. The surveyors will undoubtedly notice and drill down to investigate the causal factors - THIS will uncover the factors that will imperil Magnet status.
