Made the Decision

Published

Finally made the decision to go the FNP route. University of Alabama is receiving my application. Feels good!

I have just requested information from UAB but maybe someone here can help me. I need a distance program because of where I live. From what I have seen they all require about the same number of credits for FNP. I will be finishing my BSN (I have been a nurse for ten years) next year and want to just get it all done as soon as I can. At this point I am looking seriously at Graceland and East Tennessee State U. How long does the UAB program take if taking a full load? Is admission on a rolling basis or spring, summer, and fall? Is there any on campus time required? What is the tuition? How many clinical hours required?

Thanks so much!

I wanted to answer Ann's questions about UAB. I started my FNP program there last week. I am going part time.

You can finish the program in 5-7 semesters (It depends on what semester you begin in) if you go full time vs 9 part time. Im looking at the plan that they sent me .... FT begin summer is 6 sem, FT begin Fall is 5 sem, FT begin in Spring is 7 sem

Tuition is $198/hr, plus $100 for on-line course fee, plus a few mic. fees

Admission to the FNP on-line program is on a rolling basis.

There are maybe 2 days on campus required, but it isnt until you are actually in the FNP classes. It is for suturing lab and one other hands on lab. You have to take all the "core classes" prior to the FNP classes. Which all MSN students must do. In the class Im taking now, there are NNP, Health Admin, WHNP, ACNP, and CNS students in it.

It requires 700 clinical hours. In the first 3 semsters focusing on FNP, I will go 1 day a wk, and the last semester it is 4 days/wk.

Hope this helps some.

Thanks for your reply. It sounds like it takes a long time. A friend of mine started at Vanderbilt (she has to go there four days a semester) in their ANP/GNP last fall. She will be done at the end of the summer. That is only fall, spring, and summer. I wonder why UAB takes longer. Of course the tuition is much more reasonable than at Vandy. She is paying $800/semester hour plus fees.

Thanks and good luck to you!

Ann
