Macbook Air vs Macbook Pro

Published

Hi everyone,

I'm in the market for a computer right now and I have decided to buy either a Macbook Air or a Macbook Pro. So far, the feedback I have gotten back from my friends has seemed a bit biased. Since many of my friends are gamers, they've said I should go with the Macbook Pro, but I don't want to spend more than I have to.

I'm currently borrowing my sister's Dell laptop until I buy my own this coming semester. I'm leaning more towards a Macbook Air because of the light weight, portability and speed. I am not a very tech-savvy person, I don't game or anything like that. On the computer I am currently using, I have never needed to use the CD-Drive, so I'm really wondering if I'll actually miss not having one if I do decide on a Macbook Air.

This computer is really going to be about getting me through school. I don't need "top of the line" and I am all about practicality right now. If I decide to get a decked out Macbook of any kind, it'll be after I graduate and begin making real money.

I read an earlier post on this topic on this website where more than a few nursing students stated that while they liked their MacBook Pro's, they had more computer than they really needed. I plan on doing my school work, writing papers, research, and surfing the web.

Do you have a Macbook Air? Do you miss the CD-Drive?

I have a MacBook Pro. Never used the air before, so I can't compare, but what I have is awesome. It's fast, reliable, and cheaper than the air, right?

On a separate note, you people complaining about weight, OMG, it's like 10 pounds! You're going to be lifting 400 pound slobs your whole nursing career, so if the weight of a MacBook Pro is really that much of a problem maybe you should consider a different job.

I have a Pro as well -- I've been using it for five years, and it's starting to get a bit slow and persnickety. (Probably because I've got so much ON it.) When I have to replace it, it will be with the Air. Like most everyone else who has chimed in, I have no need for an optical drive and the weight will be a factor for me, living on a sailboat. Also, the air is easier to slip into a waterproof envelope for storage.

I would advise you, Mr. Mullen, that you would be wiser NOT to use your own name as a user name and your own photo as an avatar, especially when you write offensive posts such as the one above. You're making it really easy to identify you should your instructors, colleagues or boss spot your posts on this forum. Such an attitude is probably not one you wish to advertise to them. Not if you're smart, that is.

I have an Air and it got me through nursing school just fine. I don't even own another computer, like a desktop, to use as a primary. I'm not tech savvy in any sense and all I use a computer for is Microsoft Office and going online. I chose the Air because weight and screen size were my primary concerns, but at the time I bought it, most other Windows ultrabooks were either flimsy or just as expensive. Also, because I'm not tech savvy, I like having my Air sync effortlessly with my iPhone. I bought the CD drive but have only used it twice in two years, and just because I wanted an excuse it use it, so it's not necessary at all. To store files, I just use a NAS drive and Dropbox.

You're absolutely right, and I apologize for the offensive remark. I've had many different careers throughout my life, however the need for such a level of sensitivity and compassion was never paramount in any of them. I'm new in the nursing world and I realize that this is definitely something I need to work on. Again, thanks, and I'll definitely watch what I say.

This was ignorant on so many different levels.

Perhaps YOU should consider a different job for obvious reasons.

If they were ACTUALLY gamers they would say neither. PC is the only platform for REAL gamers. But with that said I would go with the PRO if you must get a MAC.

If anyone says MACs are for gaming they are lying between their teeth...(former computer hardware guy here...)

I went through school with a google chrome book that was small and awesome...As for a MAC you are just paying for a name, all of their parts are made in China like everyone else. Don't let the shiny aluminum fool you.

Well everyone will have there own opinions but I can only go from what has happened to me. I have had almost every type of computer there is. I guess it is bad luck because all my pc's failed. Mac is still working like the day I bought it. Maybe I got lucky this time :)

I constantly had Macs come in that needed to be fixed, conveniently right after their warranty was up...

I'm glad you took my advice about your user name and your avatar. I'm curious -- what does "Hotdogfrog" mean?

Well pc repairman was getting my computer constantly before the warranty because it wouldn't work right. I didn't have time for that any more :) Like I said before Mac has been working without needing any help from tech support at all so I am happy and would never go back to pcs :)

Hmm out of the dozens of PCs I have owned (I upgrade a lot for gaming) I never had one malfunction expect for a motherboard fail which could happen to any computer. Guess you were unlucky.

Yes very true! Me and pcs don't get along lol. But that's okay loving my dependable mac's.

I use the macbook pro because I'm old school and have a million CDs. I don't like downloading music so I buy the CDs and have a collection. Also for DVDs :) Like I said, I'm "old" school
