Lvn's in L&D?????

my ultimate goal is to become an rn working in labor and delivery. right now i am in my first term of lvn school. . decided to go lvn first as i have 3 very small kiddos, a military hubby who is constantly deployed and i thought lvn could get me some good hands on experience before i ultimately go for my rn.

i was under the impression that lvn's didn't work in l&d, but lately i've been hearing many many stories of new grad lvn's who are being picked up in l&d units and that makes me so thrilled!!! i would love to get experience in l&d as an lvn. if anyone is out there who is an lvn and working in l&d or knows an lvn who is working in l&d, please let me know. . i'd love to talk more and get more information on that!!

I would love a job in L&D too; but, in my hospital you can only work there if you are an RN or NA. We're MAGNET, don't you know!!! We were even given the same magnet pins as housekeeping; not the ones administration gave the RN's. Caused alot of bad feelings; especially from the RN's who consider LPN's nurses, too!

Boy do I remember those days of my husband being out to sea about 8 months out of the year. His last station was Honolulu on the USCG Cutter Jarvis.

As you can see, the usage of LPNs varies throughout the different states. Heck, it various throughout cities. I know here in south west Ohio that few hospitals in Dayton hire LPN's at all but several Cincinnati ones will.

Keep plugging along. I too got my LPN and am working on my RN. I think it's a great way to gain experience as a nurse while you furthering your career. Good luck!

Here in Ontario, Canada, I have never heard of any hospital that hires LPN's in labour and delivery. A few used to hire in postpartum but that is also being phased out. What the commuter said is true, LVN's even in Ontario after a 2 - 2.5 year program are not adequately trained to monitor those strips. This can get very complicated in a short time period. I am sure that that is well beyond our scope here in Ontario. I think if this is what you want, I would maybe even skip the LPN and go straight for your RN if that is possible or at least really consider it. I wish I had done that as I am now looking at another 2-3 years to bridge over to BSN which is the minimum requirement for registration here in Ontario.

Monroe Hospital in Bloomington, Indiana had an ad in the Indy Star paper yesterday looking for Lpns for L&D and postpartum.The ad says they are a new acute care facility.

I wish I was further along than almost through my first semester of nursing school (yay), and that it wasn't the opposite end of the state from me!

If your hubby is AD, and you live on/near base, the base/post hospitals do use LVN/LPN's in every unit. I know this post is old but if you read this and have any more q's give me holler. The pay isn't bad either, esp. considering I own 2 SUV's and use 1 tank of gas every 2 weeks, LOL.
