Should I become an lpn first or just go for ASN?
Please, please, please go for your RN first!!!! As a 38-year LPN, I can tell you the good money is in hospitals; and, they are not hiring LPN's. Many are coming out of LPN school and are unable to get jobs! Also, go on for your BSN. Our hospital has just made a rule of not hiring any ADN's. If you want to transfer to another department, you have 5 years to get your BSN. The sad thing is we have a nursing school (ADN) affiliated with the hospital and they won't even hire their new grads! It's all very sad. I, too, am back in school when I should be planning my retirement. Of course, this is Ohio; and, it may not be like this in other states. I would like to know what states are hiring LPN's; perhaps I could move there and forget all the stresses here where you don't know from one day or the next if you will be phased out altogether!

cpne failures
Just failed CPNE. Took a bp on an arm with a running iv of NS. We do this all the time in ER. Seemed pretty harsh to fail for that. Any comments?

LPN lay-offs in Ohio
I was sorry to hear that the brand new Atrium Hospital in Middletown has decided to lay off all of its LPN's. I hope this not true. This is one reason that I, after 35 years as a hospital LPN, am going back to school through EC. I hope to be done by summer of 2009. LPN's have gone through this before, 1986; and will continue to be ever fearful of job loss. I would encourage all LPN's to go on for their RN(if they so choose). For those of us who are the main breadwinners in our families, it seems almost essential. I do hope other hospitals in my area, especially mine, do not go the way of the Atrium. If anyone has heard of this happening in their area, please respond to this thread. And know that we're all in this together. And in my prayers.

every LPN in my hosp was laid off today
Just heard 2 days ago that a hospital in my area has laid off all their LPN's. This is very scarey! I hope my hospital doesn't decide to do the same. I've been a long time and remember the last time our place did this. It was 1986. Of course after a while when they realized how much money they were paying for all RN's, they hired LPN's back.

Letter from EC about the Virginia BON's recent decision ...
Ohio Gal ,let me know if you hear anything else about OBN not excepting EC. I only have 3 tests to go and clinicals to get done! I know I had a nurse manager that thought poorly of EC grads. She openly made them feel inferior to a traditional grad.:angryfire I'm from south of Dayton and I hope I get finished in time, too! Good luck to you!

er visitors...a funny
The visitors hang around the door like flies and as soon as it opens, several run back! We can't stop the "customers" either at my ER. You can't win!!!:selfbonk:

Will you work during a Pandemic?
yes, I would work. Having no children at home now makes a definite difference. I would go to care for anyone affected ,especially children. I eould go so that others with children won't have to.

My bad attitude
It seems to me that most managers have this same problem. I was also surprised that the "can't tell you WHO complained; but, I can tell you how many. No names, dates, times, etc." Also, the great evaluation suddenly turning into a bad one: I've heard this so often. Is it something managers are taught in leadership classes sponsered by the hospital they work at? Keep the employees down!:angryfire

I took the Excelsior CPNE Workshop
I live in Ohio and there's not a workshop close to me. I think I'm going to invest in Lynn's material and I will definitely watch for info on Rob's material. I personally am scared to death to even think about CPNE. It is my sincere hope that the instructors want you to pass!

Strange things found on (or in) a pt.
After many years in the ER have seen: Vibrators in several orifaces, Rectums containing soda bottles that had to be surgically removed, elbow pipes that were reported to have been "kicked" into a rectum by an unknown assailant, rectal zucinni, bedposts in rectums; and the best was the poor fellow with the vibrator in his rectum that when removed by the surgical resident caused the patient to have a grand mal seizure! Now that's some vibrating action!:chuckle
