LVN or RN

Published

My question may seem a bit 'retarded' but i would like insight from other nurses and potential nurses. A little background of myself, i am a recent college graduate, BA degree, and looking to get into an Accelerated BSN program. My gpa is right above a 2.5 accumulative and have done most of the prerequisites finished. Now my question is, should i go for the LVN program and get my RN soon after becuase it will be an easier way into an RN program due to the competiveness of the accelerated program. I am your average college student not to bright, but definately not at the bottom. I just think that it would take me forever to get into a nursing program and will be spending almost the same amount. And since i have most of my pre req's done after my LVN it will not be as hard to get into a program. And if i try to go straight for my RN it will take about a year to finish my pre req's and it would be about a year and a half until i can apply and get into a nursing program and with the LVN at least i would have my foot in the door. does this make any sense?

BabyCatchr i have a Bachelor's degree and have nearly completed all my pre req's, but grades are about a 2.5 accum. and my last 60 is about 2.9 which is almost a 3.0 but borderline. So many of the schools here are requesting for at least a 3.0 accum or at 3.0 in the last 60. So if i were to take the LVN program i can go for the RN faster because most my pre req's are finished. And while i have my LVN i can begin working in a facility (of course if i can find one) while also attending part time in school and make some type of income. SO for me it is just time, if i do not get into a program for another year, i will basically be working at the same retail job for another year when i could have at least finished my LVN. I have heard that it is easier for an LVN to get their RN as well. So it is alot to think about!!! Sasha1224, if i take the LVN pathway, i still would still be going back to school after.

Yes, itsjaypee08, all good points that make it tough to decide. I still may change my plans and do the LVN first.

JayPee08 it sounds like you have a game plan in place. If you re having year to wait for the RN program, but can get started right away in LVN programm then that sounds like a plan.At least you are getting started in the process, and you have alread plan ti go ahead with the LVN-RN should be easier to go accepted, and if you already ana Bacherlor's you might find a accelrated progrm for students who aleady hav bachelors and be able go that route. Good Luck in what you decide!!

sasha1224, the bachelor's program is just as hard and competitive to get in as a regular RN program so im thinking of getting my foot in the door with my career and just begin the LVN so when im done with that i can start the RN bridge with most of my prereq's done it should be a piece of cake getting into a RN program and also cheaper. thanks everyone for your comments and suggestions i do appreciate this especially when these are the same individuals going through the same situation or have been in the same situation or those that are just nurses. thanks again! see you guys in the hospitals!

Got registered to take Chem I and audit A&P I. I have already been studying A&P so I should be able to take it in the summer. I guess I am going for my BSN as of today...plans may still change at any time!!!

I would definitely go for the RN degree since the scope of practice for RN is wider...as a LPN you would have to be working under RN--it could be quite irritating....You would not be able to hang blood or start IV,not to mention it is hard for the LPNs to find job at more acute places like hospitals, plus the pay is less...

My goal is BSN. Im using the LVN program as a stepping stone to get into a RN program. I know the limitations that an LVN has vs. a RN. This is will not be my last stop but the path i have decided to take.
