LVN Relocating to Canada from USA

Published

Hi

I need advice for a friend who is an LVN seeking to relocate from USA to Canada. Any ideas on her prospects to get a job as an LVN in the Canadian market? What is the easiest route to take? Please any info will be very much appreciated. Thanks:)

Starting point would be what province is your friend looking at? Have they started the process on getting licensed with the provincial college for LPN's?

I agree with Silver Dragon. Your friend will need to have her education assessed as and IEN, and will need to write the CPNRE. The deadline for the May writing has already passed, so your friend wouldn't be able to write until September, unless the deadline is different for IENs...

As for job prospects, it would depend on where she is looking to move.

I'm a Canadian citizen and I've just relocated from Florida to Calgary. There is a process for licensing that must be followed. I applied to the CLPNA, submitted all paperwork, it was assessed and I will be writing the CPNRE in May.

And like others said, Canada is a big country with different regional economies. Your friend will need to be eligible to work in Canada and then decide where she/he wants to live.

dear itsmejuli

i am graduating from adn program in may and moving to toronto this summer.

i was wondering how well your registration process went? as i know i am not elligible to get my canadian rn liscience with my adn degree, am i right? what should i do next? can i go to bsn bridging program?

I am interested in the process of this as well. I am an LPN student and I am interested in moving to Toronto. How does this work? As far as education equivalents etc..

Where are you now?

I am in Michigan.

Starting point would be meeting provincial college requirements . Then the issue would be finding employer and meeting work permit requirements. That may be the biggest problem to overcome

In the states, LPN's are educated for 1 year. Does that satisfy the Ontario requirements? As far as I can tell it does. On their website it says nothing about a requirement, although I have heard that their LPN's have a 2 year degree. I do hold a Bachelor's degree in a another discipline.

Thanks!

CNO states that LPN must Have a diploma from an approved program or equivalent if trained outside Canada. The only way really to determine if you meet requirements is to apply to CNO for assessment or contact them and ask. LPN training in Ontario as 2 years

You have to submit all the required paperwork for review before you can assume anything. I submitted my LPN school transcript, college transcript, IV therapy course certificate and letters of reference from employers.

My daughter-in-law is finishing up an ADN degree in Florida. She'll be moving to Alberta to be with my son this summer after she writes the NCLEX. She will be submitting an application for RN in Alberta. She's talked to the college of nursing and her understanding is that she will have her education reviewed and then complete SEC.

Bottomline is that you won't know your answer until you apply and have the assessment done.

I'd be more concerned about immigration status before applying for LPN or RN.
