<NEW GRAD for a year now, NO JOB!

Nurses Job Hunt

Published

So I graduated back in january of 2010! I was an LPN since 2007. And I am finding the most difficult time getting a job. It seems like its a matter of luck nowadays because not everyone among my colleagues are getting called for interviews either =( The hospitals are saying they need BSN or a year of experience in so and so field. Which we know we wouldnt be able to attain IF WE DONT GET HIRED FIRST!!!! I really wanna work in a hospital so bad but no one would hire =( HELP! any tips? :crying2:

All nursing is real nursing. Sure differnt skill sets but psych nursing IS real nursing. Dont buy into the craziness that just because you did not land an intern position at a major hospital that you will be undesired. Some markets are really saturated and if you don't know anyone on the inside, you are just 1 out of too many in the applicant pool. Stay encouraged, it's experience!! A smart nurse would use the best of all experiences and and those experiences only add to what makes you the best you can be.

Specializes in None yet but hopefully critical care..

Thanks for that. It was just so discouraging to hear that from my friend who can't get out of the mental health field b/c the hospitals around here don't consider that real nursing skills. I hope their perception changes.

Specializes in Home Health.

There is a brand new domain called .jobs

http://nurse.jobs/

It supposedly has all the listings even the "pay for" sites have.

Specializes in geriatrics.

Ok that makes me crazy when I hear the crap about "x or y is not real nursing." Give me a break! There are many opportunities for nurses, which is amazing, because there is so much diversity. Every area has different skill sets, which can be learned and re-learned. However, no matter what the setting is, we all utilize basic nursing principles: nursing process, ABCs, communication, logic. And, by the way, you could probably grab anyone off the street and show them how to insert an IV. Those skills alone do not make anyone a nurse. Myself, I prefer LTC, psych, and OR. Also public health. I personally could not care less if I never worked a traditional hospital floor. Many of those nurses are so overworked anyway.

Hi, the positions that you were being interviewed for in the hospital, were they new grad or regular RN positions?

I graduated in Dec 09 with my BSN and searched for a job for 3 months in a hospital with no luck. I broadened my spectrum and started applying for LTC facilities and got an interview and a job within 3 weeks. I worked at a ltc/rehab facility for 9 months and luckily when I started looking again for another job I finally got calls for interviews. I had about 6-7 interviews and FINALLLY got a job in the best hospital in this area. I hated working LTC, BUT, the reason i got the job was because I had that experience. Any experience really is good experience so just keep trying and remember everything happens for a reason.
