LSU BSN

U.S.A. Louisiana

Published

Hi everybody,

Im new to this site and could really use some advice. Im starting LSU traditional BSN program. Was wondering if anyone has any advice about what to expect and what I should do to prepare. Also if anyone is actually a student at LSU that would help or if they are starting in the Fall as well.

You definitely need to have medical insurance, whether it's your own or through the school. Once clinicals start, you also have to have . Since I cannot be on my parents insurance plan anymore, I have the schools insurance. I know lots of people who keep their own plans though. Malpractice insurance is a completely different thing. They will explain all of this to you at some point! When I applied, I was finishing microbiology.

Gotcha! I will probably go with the schools insurance, seeing as to how I am uninsured! I have micro left, too! Good to know!

I just finished my first semester and so I'll be starting clinicals in January. First semester with clinicals is pretty hectic though because of time management. This past semester I was basically at school every day for a long time regardless of whether I had class or not. I treated it like a job, showed up every day and stayed to get work done. Really the biggest thing is you cannot procrastinate because it is impossible to cram and try to have time to actually study everything you need to! Especially if you want to actually sleep!

In my head, I have already committed to nursing school as a full-time job +.... I'm just going to sleep when I'm dead. I have a 5 year old, and I will probably work on the weekends. I have been advised not to work, if I can help it. Is LSU generous with student loans and aid?

I am not receiving financial aid but I know a lot of people who are. Plus LSU gives you the chance to apply for scholarships every semester. Just make sure you fill out the fafsa stuff!

Thanks! I will get all of this information in due time. I am a pre,pre,pre-planner lol :p Good Luck with everything!!

hey all its been a while since i been on here. congrats to the spring 2012 class for their acceptance. let me tell you a few words of advice. nursing school is hard work! physiology will be your hardest class hands down not because you dont know the info but because the questions require you to think more critically then before. Anatomy was not bad but the spring teacher is more difficult then the guy we had this semester. Intro is just boring and tedious. anyways for phys READ THE BOOK! for anatomy make sure you GO TO LAB when your studying. I guarentee that if you put in the work you will be successful. however LSU health is NOT a party school so if your coming from LSU it is a culture shock because the enviroment is not the same. make sure that you understand that you will be studying MOST of the time and it helps to have a study partner. anyways good luck everyone its not impossible. I passed my first semester on the first try!

Since you've been through one semester...did you see any students that already had anatomy and physiology going into their first semester? That's how I am. I'm kind of thinking (in order to stay full time) I may have to take some classes from the following semester, i.e. Pharmacology and Pathophysiology. Of course when I did take Anatomy and Physiology it was one whole class split into two semesters; at SLU it was considered the first Zoology and 2nd Zoology, and at Our Lady of the Lake it was A&P 1 and A&P 2. Anyways, I've taken both with both labs. So, I'm thinking if those grades are high enough in those classes I will already have 9 hours going into my first semester and I will be able to take the upper classes like Pharm and Pathophysiology. Just curious if you knew anyone that was like this during your first semester.

Hey Hannahelise912 - So you are actually NOT allowed to take credit for physiology even if you have taken it before. The most they allow you to accept credit for in your first semester is the 4 hours for anatomy with the lab. And abnormal psychology if you have already taken it too. AND you are NEVER allowed to take classes from the next semester ahead of time. It doesn't matter how many hours ahead you are, you can never graduate ahead of time or skip up a semester. So there might be a semester that you have already taken something but you cannot replace it with anything else. I know some people who did not have anatomy or abnormal psychology this past semester but for a lot of people it potentially messed with their TOPS. Basically LSUHSC sends a letter to the people who determine TOPS and they say that you are not a full time student but you are taking as many classes as LSUHSC allows you to. This semester it worked out fine but I know it is kind of up in the air every semester until the TOPS people actually decide what they are going to do.

Just found out that my prereq GPA with all 34 credits finished is a 3.7 ! I am sooo excited I really feel that now I have an awesome chance on getting in on the first try. Did anyone ever not get in with this GPA and having all courses finished? I would love to know!

Eeek! I procrastinated on studying for the Hesi!! I went on vacation and told myself I would study when I got back and ended up working for 12 days straight (lots of doubles). My only day off was the day of the exam! HA! So I told myself "Self, just take the Hesi as a practice test and don't stress about it". For the first time EVER, I took a test and didn't feel any anxiety! The down side however, is my hesi a2 score! I got a 72% combined. The class average is 79%. I knew I needed to go back over math problems because really how often do I use military time and ratios and such? I bombed that section so bad!! My fault! I also didn't fair very well in biology, chemistry, and a&p. There were a LOT of chemistry questions on the test that we never covered in class and I just got an A in Chem this semester! Hhhmmm.... since I cannot find a definite score for LSU, I am going ahead and turning this in with an application for Jan.15th. I am hoping that my 4.0 pre-reqs, 3.7 over-all GPA will counter balance. If not, I know I will kick the Hesi's %$^$%$&^ on the second try. I will actually study~ does anyone know someone whom got admitted to LSU's BSN program with good grades and a less than average Hesi? Totally should have crammed, but now I know EXACTLY which areas to focus on if I am not accepted with this score! I should be totally upset with myself, but I still have micro and fine arts to take this semester, so the best possible scenario is to get accepted. Worst case scenario, I finished this semester, take the Hesi again, and get accepted for Jan 2013 instead of Aug 2012!

[color=#ee82ee]don’t feel bad about the hesi stellanoella, i made a 77 and i’m hoping it's good enough with a 3.7 pre req gpa (with all classes finished) and a 3.6 cumulative. fingers crossed i get in for the fall! but, i had the same problem with doing bad in a&p and chemistry. i know they expect you to not do so well in a&p, but it still upsets me that i couldn't get at least an 80. i will try and keep the forum updated on weather i got in or not so everyone can have an idea on the kind of scores people have when they are accepted.

question: does lsu look at the pre req gpa & the cumulative or just the pre req? they don't say on the website so i’m wondering if anyone else knows.[color=#ee82ee]

Because life throws curved balls.... I will wait to apply for the Spring 2013. :( But I wish everyone whose applying for Fall 2012 ALL THE BEST.
