LSU BSN

Published

Hi everybody,

Im new to this site and could really use some advice. Im starting LSU traditional BSN program. Was wondering if anyone has any advice about what to expect and what I should do to prepare. Also if anyone is actually a student at LSU that would help or if they are starting in the Fall as well.

@beejaycee....I am in the traditional program, but I have 5 friends that are in CARE IX

@newgirla...I will call you

i plan on applying to the masters program when im done so i def. need nothing but A's and B's.

If you plan on applying to LSU's MSN program and have graduated from LSUHSC, they will accept you on probation if you have an unfortunate C or two. (I had found this out when I thought I was on the verge of failing Physio.) So don't let it make you crazy and feel as though a C is the worst thing in the world.

thank u so much for that!!! it makes me feel alot better and i can relax!!

I got an e-mail about a CPR class - we don't have to take anything till we start clinicals next semester right?

I don't know why - but I am so nervous that I'm missing something.

Did anyone get a digital recorder to record lectures? Any recommendations? I don't have much money to spend but want to be able to understand the recordings.

I am so excited and nervous - I can't wait!!

I am really getting nervous and also keep thinking that I've missed something. I think I'm just driving myself crazy at this point thinking about it. I can't wait to meet all of you and form a study group!

I'm thinking about getting a recorder for the physiology lecture but unfortunately I won't have the extra cash until I get my refund check. I know I won't need it this semester, but I got a super awesome stethoscope for Christmas!

Ok, I'm freaking out some more... I just got another e-mail about a dosage test - it was sent to all soph I, but clearly we are not meant to take it - are they trying to freak us out on purpose?:uhoh3:

I did finally get in touch with them about moodle and I'm all signed up - thanks for the heads up about that helpline number. Now I can print out all the stuff for fundamentals.

There are four different required books for this class - do we really need to buy them all?

Are you talking about NURS 2371? What are the 4 books?

You definitely need the "Fundamentals of Nursing" book as you will use it for subsequent classes.

If the APA book is still on the list, make sure you buy the corrected version of APA 6, and not the first printing (don't buy a used copy!). If you have friends in the class, you can buy one copy and share it. There are just enough changes from v.5 to v.6 to make your life miserable when you write your paper.

IMO, the "Nursing: Scope & Standards" book is another that several friends can share one copy but you should have a copy on your personal bookshelf eventually.

Several things seem to be messed up in the IT department right now. Some of us who are actually in the middle of a class block right now (CARE) are getting messed up stuff in our email and strange things are happening on Moodle. Don't fret :D.

Yep, the dosage calc is for SOPH II. Things can be a bit disorganized around here - you'll learn to roll with the punches. You often won't know schedules until a week before (if not less) and other things will turn on a dime. Once you get rolling in a semester, things calm down as long as you let them (studying never lets up, though - haha!).

Thanks! That is a relief - I started to read the e-mail, "review chapters 1 thru 10" and kinda flipped out. :)

The four books that are required are:

Guide to the code of ethics for nurses

Nursing: Scope and standards of practice

Publication manual of the american psychological association

Fundamentals of nursing the art and sccience of nursing care

My personal opinion is that you won't use the Guide To The Code unless you are a world-champion studier. I never opened it and got an A. Looking back, it is a good book and differentiates some concepts with better clarity than I had while in class. I.e., what is the difference between integrity and honesty? But I got enough from the lectures and my notes to not really need it. On the plus size, it looks great on my bookshelf. ;)

Nursing: Scope & Standards - NOT a must-have, but it IS a should-have. If money is an issue, there are multiple copies in the library so you can go familiarize yourself with it. If you feel you aren't getting what you need from the lectures, then go buy it but the standards will be spelled out in the lectures.

Publication Manual of the APA - you will make yourself crazy trying to write an APA paper without it. The bad news is that you will make yourself crazy trying to write an APA paper with it. :) But you will need it (or access to it) for your paper or you will get burned by not having it! The personal paper and the group paper can make or break you.

The fundamentals book you definitely, not-doubt-about-it, must have it. It is a big ol' fat book that is a pain to lug around but if you buy it new, you will get an activation code for the website where there are pdfs of the chapters.

This is just my opinion:

Keep in mind that you will have to have all of those required books on hand for the tenure of your college curriculum. I'd suggest buying them all now, because the books for your SOPH II semester are very pricey (over $500).

I don't know how anyone could live without their own APA manual. Every paper in your 3 years in school will be APA format. I guess it could be done, but I know I couldn't be running back and forth trying to find a manual when it was crunch time for the papers. Remember not to buy a used copy - it has to be APA 6.

There is no getting around buying the big book - it is necessary now and will be continually used in later classes.

Whatever you do, don't blow this class off. The instructors like to say it's a fluff/fun class and I thought it was just common sense until I got my first test back - yikes. Just get a good feel for it, give it at least some of your time, (you will want to put it on the backburner, but don't) and go from there - this is just my personal advice.

Like I said before, if you can manage buying them all now, do it! Your second semester books will be some crazy cash money ;).

Haha - we posted at the same time! Hiya!
