I will begin LPN school in December & I can't wait. It's my goal to continue on & get my RN in the future. Lately I've been hearing some derogatory things about Practical / Vocational nursing...

Some say that LPN's arent "real" nurses...what's your take on this?

Some say that LPN's do all the work no one else wants...

Some say that LPN's aren't respected very much because they aren't RNs.

Are these things true?

Oh sigh. I don't know. There are about a million threads on this forum on the subject. Who has the energy anymore with this?

I can only tell you how I feel personally. LPNs are real nurses. When I went to work as a new RN, I was trained by mainly LPNs, they know their stuff just like RNs.

They do have limitations based on their scope of practice so you need to investigate the area of nursing you wish to work in to be sure you will be able to work there as a LPN. My MIL is also a LPN and she is one of the best nurses I know :)

Thank you so much! I really appreciate you commenting back. I noticed it says your specialty is OB...do you have LPNs on the maternity floor? That is where I really want to be :)

I only have one LPN working on my unit. She is post partum and nursery only. Our state scope of practice for LPNs doesn't include L&D. She is an awesome nurse and can work circles around most people.

Where I did clinicals, I had no idea that some of the nurses I was working with were LPNs and not RNs until I got close enough to see their name badges...lol! They were doing all the same work as the RNs. They knew their stuff and seemed very well respected....at least at the places I did my rotations. I am sure there will be a few snotty folks who don't respect LPNs but who cares....

I am about to take my NCLEX-PN and I am darn proud of my accomplishments. :)

Oh ok, so it's a state by state decision. Thanks again, its reassuring to hear first hand that LPNs are respected & great nurses!

That's awesome! Congrats! You'll have to let me know how it is---I'm nervous to take it!

wow, that is a sad thought, i was thinking of going back to school for nursing, i am a therapist right now and with hmos there are times i making less than a cna.

i hope that an rn's logic wouldn't be to looks down on an lpn / lvn (serious here no joke intended) .... because, by that very same logic wouldn't an rn be looked down on by the bsn and so forth.

i would think, that as co-worker, you are all working in a shift together as a team. i think all nurses are an important part of the health care field. just a thought :)

Im proud to be an Lpn student, and a Licensed Practical Nurse in a few months...Many people dont respect the president, but he still has a job to do, and many more presidents will be elected thereafter to do the same job that soooo many people are not qualified or even cut out to do! If Lpn's were not useful, and nolonger needed, they would not keep licensing them.....Lpn's rock...

I know this is a little old...but just had to chime in...Mazy, so well said and I, as an LPN, just do my thing. Yeah, yeah LPNs are being phased..BS! and if so, believe me it would take a very long time and that "phased out" thing has been going around forever...
