Im a new grad LPN, July 09. i just got a job as a HHA because there was nothing for LPNs in my area. I obviously intend to keep looking, but how long can I go without working as an LPN before Im never able to get a job? Also, will this HHA position hurt me, I mean I had no choice but to take it, our family is financially struggling as are many, but I still dont want to give up on my dreams!

While your working as an hha, keep going for your RN.....I hope it works out, best wishes!;)

unfortunately, i just looked at the LPN-RN program, and I must have 1 year experience as an LPN before I can be admitted!!!

continue working, and continue looking for work as LPN

Sure, but during this time you can work on the prereqs for that particular program. I would talk with the advisor and ask what needs to be taken before you can apply for a spot......take care

Congratulations on obtaining your LPN  I am a new grad too! I'm wondering where you are located. I am in NJ and was able to find 1 program that did not require a year's experience. Also, I would advise working on prerequisites as well...just so you are prepared for that opening that WILL come!

As far as work goes, maybe you can transfer your certification and become a CNA, get in a LTC facility...make a name for yourself (which you are already doing) and someone may think of you when an opening comes up! Be encouraged and I thank you because I had no idea that I could be using my CNA license while I had my LPN! Thought it was illegal. I didn't want to do the CNA thing, but can't find anything as an LPN...everyone wants experience. I've decided to go back to school! I'm gonna start looking for work as a CNA as well!

God Bless, take care :)

Employers realize economic reality. If they ask you about the HHA job, just tell them that you did what you had to do to support your family. No one would question it.

there are great on line prereq courses thru Santa Barbara City College (look for accredited online programs) to help u towards your RN, mesa 79 is offering great advice. No one would fault you for working "under" your capacities if you are taking classes towards your RN.

not to be a "downer" here, but you know that if you are a licensed lpn and work as a hha, you will be held to lpn standards. in other words, in a court of law, you will be considered a lpn. just like if a rn can't find rn jobs and decides to work as an lpn (that she previously did before becoming a rn).. she will be held to the standard of a rn no matter if it is a lpn position. anybody follow me ?? :coollook:

Did you ever consider working up in the company that you are working for? If you are a believer in the "one" please pray and keep looking.
