I have searched endlessly online but never did find the answer. Are LPNs able to work in the school system as non instructional school nurses? I heard you need to be certified to work in the board of education, but all certifications are only available to RNs with bachelors. I'd really like to be able to work in a school system. Please let me know if anyone knows of any information. Thanks!

I'm not sure about NJ, however in MD CNA's, LPNs, and RNs are allowed to work in the school system.

I'm currently a health aide in an elementary school, however my boss is a RN and she supervises two health rooms. We work under a " cluster model"

I know of some counties that only hire RNs and LPNs in health rooms as well.

I'm not sure about the " being certified to work by the board of ed". I was hired via the board of ed and health services.

Hope this helps.

I haven't heard of LPN's getting hired but I do know that if you go through an agency and see if they will place you. Look into Gotham Nurses or Tempositions, I'm not sure if they have nursing positions in NJ but they might. Good luck and keep me posted.

I agree ! We also use agency nurses that are LPNS to sub for the school system. Once again this is the district where I work.

Thank you, I can definitely look into Temp agencies and see if they can help.

I spoke to one my nursing classmates and she said i can get a position as an assistant to a school nurse. In NJ, you do need a bachelors to be certified to work as a head school nurse..or basically fly solo as a school nurse. It helps, but you will not get the summer benefits or whenever the school is closed. You get paid only the hours you put in.

Still crossing my fingers to hear better options for this position.

I'm a school nurse in nj. To be a school nurse you need to be a RN with a BSN and have school nurse certification through the state. Schools can employ RNs without the bachelors or certification but only as assistants or substitutes.

I am an LPN and was hired to be the school nurse for a charter school in Newark-

I think public schools have stricter rules, but I believe with the charter schools they can basically hire whoever cause I know of one other nurse at a highschool (also in a charter school in Newark ) who is also an LPN.

Looks like there's your answer.
