I was not aware that there were a 'lot' of online LPN-to-RN programs. However, many publishers slickly advertise themselves as online programs when they are really not. Companies such as the College Network and Distance Learning Systems come to mind as publishing companies that mislead customers into thinking they are nursing programs.
Unless these programs are through a community college I would careful. There were few legit online LPN to RN programs last time I checked. When I went from LPN to RN I had a lot of clinical hours to complete this I think is why the LPN to RN programs are primarily offered in traditional settings.
Excelsior College offers a distance-based LPN-to-ASN degree completion program that results in RN licensure if you pass NCLEX. The program is not accepted for licensure by all state boards of nursing due to the lack of clinical practicum hours. In addition, several other states have additional requirements that Excelsior graduates must fulfill. In essence, you will be fine attending Excelsior as long as you never plan to get licensed in California or a few other states.
Indiana State University offers an online LPN-to-BSN degree completion program, although I have not met anyone who has been able to successfully complete it due to the onerous task of arranging one's own clinical practicum rotations. Furthermore, the program is not accepted by all state boards of nursing for licensure.
