You must be a certified PICC line nurse to insert lines, change dressings, and remove the Picc lines.

I think this varies from state to state. Read the Nurse Practice Acts. I worked at a teaching hospital in GA and I did dressing changes and maintenance of the line and it was within my scope of practice according to GA BON. It is also within my scope of practice in NC too. As far as removal goes, all of my patients went home with them, so I don't know. We were allowed to removed central lines from the subclav and the jugular area.

Sorry...I didn't realize this was a LPN forum before I replied :)

Here in CA I remove PICC lines and CVL's ( I work on peds ICU floor). I do not believe that LPN's (LVN) can do this however...but of course this varies with different states. Check your states nurse practice act.

I was on the IV team in a Mi hospital, and we (LPN's) were allowed to remove picc lines , do dressing changes & visually assess the sites but not place them. That was approx 4 yr.s ago. Just make sure you have the RN show you a few times & then watch as you do it til your comfortable with the procedure, I'm sure whatever facility your in will make sure you do a skills check on it :0)
