LPN Physical: How honest re antidepressants

Nurses General Nursing

Published

I'm about to start an LPN program and need to submit the physical. I've read alot on this site about nurses on different psych meds. I've been on zoloft, a low dose, for 8 years for an episode that occurred after a move. I've never relapsed, but stayed on the meds because I felt so much more productive. Do I submit this information? Could they rescind my acceptance? Any feedback would be great. Thank you. .

Good luck in your program. I wasn't forthcoming with the nitty gritty details of my health history. That is for me and my physician alone. They need to know if you are physically and mentally capbably of performing the job, that's all.

If it were something like a seizure disorder, yes. But something as personal as an episode that occurred that many years ago, no. People can be judgemental.

However, if you said yes, it should hurt your chances either.

Good luck!

Thanks so much for the feedback; one is is the dark about these things sometimes. Susan

Heck, half the population of the US is on antidepressants ... (well, I'm joking, of course, but it seems like it much of the time.) I'm not sure that's info that's worth being dishonest over. :) It certainly shouldn't have any impact either way on your acceptance into school -- I'll bet big bucks that some of your faculty are on antidepressants. Best wishes!

They came to my school and gave us physicals and took 3 vials of blood which Im sure they tested for whatever, I don't think it will hurt you one of my classmates was on a couple of drugs and she didn't have a problem, they didn't ask if we were on any psych meds, so I don't think you have to say anything, I say don't worry about it and good luck being a lpn is great im working on my RN now. :p

Zoloft is not considered a drug of abuse, so you don't have to worry about drug screens. The only way they know is if you tell them. I wouldn't -- because it won't affect your ability to perform. And does anyone need to know everything your physician knows?

As it turns out, the way the question is written lets me off the hook. On the physical, it states "conditions or medications YOU THINK your instructors should be aware of." I don't think they need to be aware of it so I feel better. All your feedback was great. Thanks
