Quick story.
Patient brought to floor ? overdose, substance abuse. Low LOC. I check vs, o2. 90/50, 75 o2. I alert RN-charge nurse doing paper work patient is crashing, he calls ems to take pt to hospital.
HELLO!!! I am a NURSE. I am not underskilled, underpaid, underutilized, second class citizen, lackey or scum bag nurse faker. I care for patients, save their lives sometimes and make them better.
I NEVER heard a patient say 'Dear are you a registered nurse or licensed practical nurse? before I gave them care.'
I carry myself as a caring, competent, proactive nurse. LPN's who want to be RN's....go for it! LPN's who "waa-waa-waa" RN's hate me. GET OVER IT! You'll waa-waa-waa as a RN.
I am a LPN. I study, take certifications, and learn, learn, learn. I run circles around younger RN's (Im 58) and I will not give any med I do not have a mental drug card in my head. Thats why the RN's ask me.
I LOVE RN's! They do the paper work so I don't have to. Stay out of my way RN's I have treatments to give......
And my shoes are polished everyday before I go to work!
LPN, and proud of it!

I love you, OldMare.
I am an LPN going for the RN. In fact, I take the boards pretty soon. But I was talking to one of our ED nurses, another old mare LPN who's been doing this since the earth was cooling, and told her flat out that I'd want her triaging, not me.
NOTHING takes the place of BTDT.
If we ever have an emergency here and need all hands on deck I'm gonna get out of their way and take instruction from the experienced nurses, not the initials.

You don't have to convince me...I love being an LPN! Hate LPNs that whine over their jealousy of RNs but do nothing about it-hey, the option to continue with schooling for the RN licensure is open for all interested parties. Also hate when some LPNs go out of their way to make RNs miserable unprovoked. Hate the paperwork RNs have to do-not remotely interested. I am constantly reading, because I enjoy it. I post here because I gain a wealth of information to improve my practice.
What are you venting about, though? Is there something that happened in this process that made you angry? Sorry, I ain't allowing the person who initially led me to the pens of my dreams get agitated...let me at 'em!
And, yeah, the whiners will "waa-waa" as RNs...wait and see...

thanks old mare i'm in LPN school now and everybody always asking "why don't just go a head and go for my RN?" I worked in a nursing home and the LPNs there really inspired me, the good ones ( and the good CNAs) that really care are all some of those sweet people have i can't wait to be an LPN
