I was just wondering if anyone had heard of/had an opinion/went to the Medical Professional Institute in Malden Ma? I am on a wait list for a nursing program at a community college, but my start date isnt until Jan 2012 because of the waitlist. I was considering trying to do an LPN program in the meantime. Any thoughts? (btw, my community college has a wait list for their LPN program too, so that's not an option.)

Yes I just graduated from MPI. What do you want to know? They already started classes for this year though. I loved the instructors, very much want everyone to succeed.
lots of questions! :)
basically how long it took you to complete the program, if you enjoyed it, thought it was worth the money. I would be driving like an hour to get there, so I want to make sure it's worth it for me. have you found a job yet? how many students were in your class?
I am supposed to go to an info session on wednesday night, but not sure what the weather will be like and I am anxious to learn about the program.
they told me that there is a class starting in May.
Oh cool, I didnt know that. May is a good time to start. It took a full year, full time. I drove from Haverhill,Ma everyday about 40 minutes each way. I knew a few people who drove from RI to go to this school. The teachers are nice, very helpful so is the staff. It is expensive we paid 17K for 2009 class, sure it is going up. The only thing i hated was the uniforms, pretty much useless, it was long sleeve burgundy jackets which didnt' roll up too high. I am sure they will have a new uniform given that they got alot of complaints from students. Be prepared to travel alot, I had to go to rotations in Newburyport, Georgetown, Boston, Tewskbury, Stoneham, and the farthest for me was Brockton. There were about 30 of us to begin with and in the end we were about 24 or 25. The people who didnt make it had jobs or didn't have a vehicle to get them to rotations. Very important to have transportation and some type of support system. I think it was worth it, its a new school as far as LPN is concerned. They offer other trades as well but this is their 3rd year teaching LPN. I was the 2nd year class. They have a website www.mpi.edu.
No haven't looked for a job yet. Will be soon though.
Tips to do well in this program.
Study all the time, you will have weekly exams.
Record lectures if the professor allows you to.
don't be afraid to ask questions if you are unclear about something.
Don't depend on your peers for anything, only depend on yourself.
Go to the info session, you may like it. Good Luck.
thank you so much! i'm getting really excited about it, so i hope it works out. thanks for all the info! good luck in your job search.

Ab.....I was interested in MPI too.....it was just the price and the fact that it only has initial approval by the Mass Board of Nursing that turned me off......I was told that if you wish to continue to RN - then you would have to start from scratch and I just couldnt take that chance(no idea when it would get full approval). Have you looked into any other LPN Programs?
I havent looked into any other LPN programs except the one at quinsigamond, which is where i am on a waitlist for the RN program. (i am almost done with the pre-reqs).
I went to the info session tonight at MPI. I'm still not sure. It's an hour long ride for me, so thats a big factor.

It is very encouraging to see this thread because I discovered this program only a few days & only live a few towns away. I forgot the information sessions were on Wednesdays till just reminded by this thread. I would have attended.
But about having to start from scratch to continue to RN might really discourage me. Any more detailed info on that & why? Boo. This was really looking good.
Interesting it's been around for two years, though. A bit of research just revealed that it should only take two years of students successfully getting their licenses to gain full approval from the board of nursing.
I think I'm going to call MPI tomorrow & inquire about how far along they are on their approval status.
You are right, but I went into the program already having all my pre-reqs for RN. So not being able to transfer the credit didn't bother me. Plus everywhere there was a waitinglist. MPI is in the process of getting NLN accreditation. They are also in the works trying to set up a LPN to RN program. So this school isn't going anywhere. They are going to be around for awhile.
Anyway I took my NCLEX on Tuesday and Wednesday found out I passed.
Good Luck and God Bless

Nurse Dee - Congrats on passing the NCLEX!!!! Do you have a job already? I have no pre reqs at all which is why the initial accred. bothered me. Good to know that MPI will be starting an LPN-RN program - hopefully it will have full accreditation by then, since it is close to where I live too.
Ab - have you decided what to do? My LPN program is about 45 min away so hopefully MPI will start an LPN-RN program
lil pixie - let me know what you find out about MPI - it sounds like a good program (except for the scrubs!).

No job yet, just saw my license posted on the BON website. Sending out resumes today. I left Massachusetts and now live in Florida so its going to be a challenge get around. Honestly MPI helped me alot. They will help you too. I know it stinks having to do your pre-reqs outside of MPI but the real reward is getting your license in the end. Also once you graduate you are more likely to be accepted to their RN program once they do get approval to teach it at their school. Former students always get first pick :)
