How many LPNs IV cert.

Nurses LPN/LVN

Just wondering how many other schools besides mine (Northwest state) have to have their LPNS IV cert. Do you think we'll get to use this skill in LTC?

Thanks for the clarification..i thought you were expecting a fourth

on subject i don't know any lpns that are not certified...the schools are stepping up to the plate now but a lot have had post-grad opportunities with hospital or other work related training

i am IV certified in my current place of employment..... it was like a 3 hour class and i had to have 3 supervised IV sticks before i got the certificate... i work in a LTC/rehab facility which is part of a hospital.... as far as you using them in LTC... yes... you have to start IVs for the readiology department for the CTs, you have to start IVs if fluids or IV antibiotics are ordered, if you have a code then you best start some IVs (LOL) so yes, you will be starting lots of IVs...

When I was in school we were certified in I.V. Therapy. We had to have so many sticks and etc.... I was able to stick when I went to work but was clueless on how to hang meds. :uhoh21: I also did not have any experience inserting a foley. I think most of what I learned in LPN school was how to be a CNA. I learned more when I went to work in the first month than I did the whole time I was in school. BTW...I went to school in Louisiana.

IV certification was part of the curriculum at my school. I work in LTC/Rehab. On my floor, not even the RN's start IV's. We call to another floor when we need one started. I've been at this facility for 3 months and we have had to start just one IV in that time.
