now I'm on a job hunt but don't know where to start. I really want to be in a hospital but I hear that's not a good idea with it being so demanding. But then do I look into agencies? My ultimate goal is rn in labor and delivery.

i agree that they can be utilized in hospital settings, but RNs are more ideal I suppose based on what floor in the hospital we are talking about as they can work with low to very high acuity patients. I never said that LPN scope of practice isn't wide in certain states but it's still not as wide as the RN scope which is probably one of the big reasons LPNS have been phased out of most major hospital floors. The RN can Simply do more.

You seem so against LVNs in the hospital setting. Geeze. Are you against LVNs in general? It would help staffing problems if they hired LVNs in hospitals. I know of a hospital that hires LVNs for the L&D floor. I just don't see where you're coming from.

Specializes in Home health, Addictions, Detox, Psych and clinics..

No no I'm not against LVNs/LPN's. I am an LPN :) I'm just stating facts is all. I love what I do as an LPN. I've practiced in a few different states now, each with pretty different scopes of practice. Sorry if it seems I'm against LPNS, because I'm not. We all know the LPN struggle, kinda stuck in the middle somewhere haha.

That's why I think they should bring back LVNs to the hospitals. I know there are such different scopes in different states, I know RNs can do everything. But there is no reason why LVNs can't work in hospitals when they have before.

Oh yeah I hear ya..

I saw a few positions last week for LPNs in L&D at one of the major hospitals where I'm at.

I'm sorry, I should've added in Chicago:smug:

Specializes in Adult ICU/PICU/NICU.

The hospital from which I retired from is now hiring LPNs in the NICU of all places.

What state/hospital?

What state/hospital?

I can narrow it down & say not TX or CA. According to her profile it's in the Midwest somewhere. [emoji12]

I worked in neuro icu for a year as an Lpn. The company did a ton of layoffs and all 5 of the lpns were laid off along with hundreds of other employees. It's challenging but I loved it and it taught me a ton. Really prepared me for RN

Where I'm from the hospitals won't hire LPNs and most of those who haven't been laid off from the hospital have been given a time frame to get their RN or find another place of employment. Some will hire an RN with an Associates but have them sign a paper stating they have so long to complete their BSN. It's not so much about scope of practice as my state is one of the least restrictive, but more so about achieving Magnet status...I'm getting old and just graduated from my ADN program because I want to do what I did years ago (plus a little more). Hopefully by the time I finish I won't need a walker, as the lowest level of education needed for entry level seems to keep going up at these facilities.

OP, I wish you luck in finding a job doing what you stated...from some responses they still exist but you may need to relocate to get it.
