LPN functions in your dialysis unit

I am looking into expanding the role of the LPN at our dialysis facility. I am currious what LPNs routinely do at your units?

Currently, our LPNs give PO, SQ, IM meds and blood. We are looking at IDPN and select IV narcotics.

What are your thoughts on this topic?

We give IV meds too. All cath care. We write orders, call the docs....I think I need a raise.

I actually just promoted one of my LPN's to charge nurse:nurse:

Actually at our clinics we use LPN's who do meds, no iron, though and do not assess! and do not work in acute in the hospital. generally in my company they try to put an LPN in charge on another Isle though Liability isn't justified in my thoughts

At my unit, LPNs do everything RNs do, except for charge and peritoneal. The LPNs do acutes, too.

The techs do assessments where I work and I do not agree w/ this practice, which I have stated in writing to my NM.

Same here. Although they do PD as well.

Guess the only thing they don't do is charge and take/write orders.

Our LPN's do everything RN's do except acute hemo's, give IV iron, blood or take orders from the docs. We are a hospital based facility. Our LPN's are awesome!

:balloons: Ive been doing acute dialysis for 8 years. I do all modalities including HD bedsides, CAPD, CCPD, CRRT. I do every thing the RN's do including assessments. We contract with the hospital. They have changed the contract and no more LPN's will be allowed to take call. They grandfathered me in. ( I've been there longer than anyone else including the manager.):)
