**(this is the email i got back from ISU regaurding their LPN to BSN degree, and approved states)***some one may want to sticky this!

Thank you for your interest in Indiana State University's distance programs. The LPN to BSN program is a bachelor degree-completion program via distance learning .

Please visit the College of Nursing web site at http://www.indstate.edu/site/nurs/891.html for further information about the LPN to BSN program.

ISU has an exclusive contract with The College Network so as to provide the study guides for the initial phase of the program. There are three phases to the LPN-BSN Track.

Phase I are Gen Ed requirements that will need to be completed with The College Network or a local college in your area. When acquiring Gen Ed requirements, 50 credit hours need to be at a 300 or 400 level course. Some of these courses are available at ISU. If you have a previous degree, some or all of the credits may transfer into the College of Nursing. After completing Phase I you then apply to ISU http://www.indstate.edu/join_us/admissions.htm. You will then fill out a second application with the College of Nursing http://www.indstate.edu/site/nurs/pdfs/con-admission-application.doc

Enrollment requirements include: (due by Nov 1st for Spring Semester) (due by June 1st for Fall Semester)

These entrance copies will be kept in your file at the College of Nursing/Student Affairs Office, 749 Chestnut St., Room 328, Terre Haute, IN 47809. All nursing courses are completed online. Even though the courses are online and self-paced, they are within the traditional Fall and Spring semesters and taught by on-campus faculty members.

Then clinicals will be done in the state where you reside, with a preceptor at a local facility. This link is the FAQ (frequently asked questions) for the delivery of clinical education for the LPN-BS Distance Education Track: http://www.indstate.edu/site/nurs/pdfs/faq-lpn-bs-clinical.pdf

Does anyone have any ideas for purchasing prereq study guides other than The College Network...I need A&P and Microbiology, Intro to Sociology, and Intro to Psych.

Barbra Ann

i am also studying for microbiology. I am using the outline from excelsior since that is who I am using to test out, and "super review for microbiology" book from REA i bought on Amazon. The internet has tons of information also. go to flashcardexchange.com and type excelsior microbiology or A&P in search and you will get every chapter. Also quizlet.com type in microbiology or A&P and get tons of info to help study. hope the info helps. good luck. You can go to REA.com or clep.com and get study guides for your other subjects. studygroup101.com sells study guides for excelsior students but they need some of the same prereqs we do and their guides are $10 each.

Thanks, that helps a lot....by the way, do you have any TCN study guides?

Barbra

i am not using the tcn study guides. they are very expensive and not any better than other info i found to study from. it is all personal choice though to use them.

Thanks for the info.

Barbra, I recommend studygroup101.com for inexpensive and pretty thorough notes. :) Please be aware that we don't allow any buying or selling on the forums on allnurses, which includes posting and asking if anyone has anything for sale. Thanks!! :)

Thanks, I wasn't aware of that fact.

Nora, EC grads cannot obtain direct licensure by exam in Virginia at this time; you would have to endorse in with 960 hours of RN practice in another state. There is info on this here:

State Board Requirements - excelsior.edu

Hope that helps!

hi there

does anyone start or plan to start the isu from virginia. i would like to get some info about the experience. thanks.

nora, there are few things you need to consider if you are considering isu. first, the program is very intense. most students take two classes a semester, but the program requies almost constant study 7 days a week. if you work full time or if you have children or other responsibilities you may be at risk for burn out or not progressing. if you decide to take only one class a semester, it would take you longer to graduate. however you could work and enjoy your friends/family with only one class a semester.

while isu is markeded to lpn students who are working, the program as it exists is not lpn or work friendly. the program is a fickle thing and wants all your full time attention. the program is very good but there is so much busy work and excess work built into the porogram that the distant learninng concept is being defeated.

then there is the problem of locating clinical sites (for those students outside california). it can be challenging as most facilities want an on-site instructor when a student is at their facility. if you are outside calif, you will be responsible for arranging your clinical placement--take that into consideration.

Thank you for the post. I am aware of the endorsement for Virginia. I am planning to apply to Thomas Nelson Community College LPN/RN program in Hampton this fall. If I do not get in, I am going to start Excelsior College, work in South Caroline for 6 months to get the 960 hours and then endorse the license in Virginia.

Based on the posts about ISU, it seems too long to complete and costly for me.

I am only scared of the clinical exam at the end of the program at EC.

Can you please tell me your experience with the clinical exam.

Thank you
