LPN back up plan.

A few weeks ago I went down to Ivy tech and talked to the new student advisor for the prenursing students. she was very nice yet very pushy and like it had to be her way on things. And before I forget I should mention that I never did to good in school and Im not the best of test takers. The TEAS and getting As and Bs in all the classes that count is somthing that Im a little worried about but I do have confidence that I can work hard to obtains As and Bs in my general Ed courses. Its the TEAS that Im kind of really really nurvouse about. I have to do remidial math and college reading course so I see it as a blessing becuase it will help when I am ready to take the TEAS... any way...

My goal is RN I want to get my ASN first to save money and to get the experience as an RN and so I can pay for my BSN also. Im a current non practicing CNA but Im going to try to get back in to that line of work.

durring my meeting with the advisor I had asked about the LPN program also and how competitive that was she said it wasnt competitive and that IF LPN wasnt my goal then I shouldnt do it. then she had went on to say that if I failed or droped a course that I had another attempt at it and that if at my 2nd attempt I failed again that I would also have to wait 2 years before retaking it again and the same went for the TEAS. she also stated to that as long as I got a C or better in the classes and I did eh ok on the TEAS that I would most likely get in to the LPN program but again it I would have to take all the gen EDs that I fialed and the TEAS all over again to get in to the LPN-ASN program. I asked well what if I have done some of the classes twice and taken the TEAS again and still dont do good then what? her reply then we need to find you a different career! I was kind of offended in a way, I myself dont thing that the Ged Eds or the TEAS determine on how good of a nurse you will be it the core classes that can determine that. IMO the gen Eds just get you in the swing of things and to see if you are one that just gives up or keeps trying.

any way so I have my plan that If I dont get in to the RN program and I have taken the TEAS and some of the Gen Eds twice with in my 2 year span and get Cs and do good on the TEAS and dont get in to the RN program I want to do the LPN program because to be honest I will do what ever it take right now to reach my set goals. plus I really dont want to be a sitting duckfor 2 whole years. I might as well go to school for a year and get my LPN and get a job as an LPN I think that it will strengthen my resume some also. Plus I will have my text books so I can study for the Gen eds that I need to retake and for the TEAS if this was to occur where I couldnt get in to the RN program. I myself think its better than just giving up and looking for another career. I think that if I keep trying for 5 years I either just stay LPN status or go look for a different career or posibly a different school.

in brief:

Try to get in to the RN program if that fails try to do LPN so Im not just sitting and waiting for two years to retake whatever kept me from getting in to the RN program and transition when the time is right in to ASN then go on right after to get my BSN and my advisor dont know nothin about my LPN plan if things dont work out lol

AmI right or is my advisor right? Im going to do what I want regardless but I just want peoples opinions. I have no problem with becoming an LPN IMO a nurse is a nurse LPN or RN. I think its stupid that an LPN cant work in a hospital anymore ( or atleast in places like the ICU or rsident halls of a hospital. .) at least thats the way it is in IndianaI dont know what its like else where.

I had a counselor tell me because my GPA wasn't stellar, that I need to find a new career and that nursing wasn't for me. I said screw you. Took the pre reqs, tool the Teas (passed on first try) and applied to Lpn programs and should be accepted in a few weeks. After that, my goal is to get my RN. Work hard and good luck.
