Low overall GPA, High science GPA & TEAS score

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

I was wondering if anyone currently is in my boat where my overall GPA is low (3.3) due to taking over 90 units at my CC.. Apparently they count all of my credit units to calculate my overall GPA BUT only let me use 70 units for graduating. (WTH CSU's??)

I changed my major from political science to nursing. Turns out I really hate politics! Anyways I did pretty terrible in all of those classes like c's and d's. School dropped the D's but was unable to replace the C's. The only A grade as a political science major I ever received was in microbiology, which I just took to meet my GE since it seemed interesting. I realized I really have a passion for sciences!

Anyways long story short, my science GPA is a 3.89 ( i got one b in human anatomy due to not filling out one side of one of my exam ugh) and my overall TEAS score was 91% my first attempt. I might take it again but probably will only get something 1-2% higher..

My overall GPA seems to make me pretty uncompetitive for all CSU's...BUMMER. I'll definitely apply but I think it's a stretch. I've not done any research to any other BSN nursing programs outside of California. If anyone is in my situation, please let me know where I should apply outside the CSU system that will give me a chance?

Have you looked at CSUS? They do not count your overall GPA. They give points for your nursing GPA and TEAS score with bonus points for things like foreign language proficiency, volunteer or work experience, and economic status. Here is the link to their selection criteria: http://www.csus.edu/HHS/nrs/programs/undergraduate/traditional/Docs/selection_criteria_8-31-15.pdf.

If you can, I would suggest taking anatomy over. You can take it the semester that you are applying and us "in-progress" for the grade. If you have no other B's in your prereq's then your application GPA would be a 4.0. With that GPA and your TEAS score you should have no problem being accepted.

It's a funny world, isn't it? A 3.3 GPA in any other major would be considered way above average. But we use a completely different achievement scale for nursing. Crazy.

I agree, it seems like a 3.3 GPA would be a great standing for a nursing program, but because it's so demanding of a major its gotta be competitive I guess. Sounds like you have a knack for the sciences since you kicked butt in Microbiology and the TEAS exam score is great.

I guess I should be more clear. Science prereq is 3.89 but once I calculate the other prereqs like english and critical thinking (B's), it's dramatically lower like 3.7? I'd have to double check though. I took those GE courses my first two semesters in college when I was 18 and a smart***. I literally wrote my final argument essay on "the issues and hypocrisy of tenure in higher education", (my professor had tenure) ugh, the things I would say to my 18 year old self. :banghead:

But thanks for the suggestion on CSUS! It gives me a sliver of hope. I must have missed their repeat policy. I will definitely repeat those classes at a different CC.

I totally understand! I did exactly the same thing. I ended up returning to school after about 8 years and had to fix some of the damage that I did when I was young and completely unfocused. If I were you I would speak with a counselor at your community college to see if they grant repeats for reasons such as significant time lapse, to raise GPA, etc. The official policy at my college is that you cannot repeat any course that you earned a C or higher. However, we can petition to repeat a course for the reasons that I just gave. The counselor approved the repeats and I just repeated the classes that I previously earned B's in (which happen to be English, critical thinking, and chemistry). You may be able to get into a late-start English class this fall then take critical thinking and anatomy in the spring. You can have one science and one non-science in-progress when you apply, so if you managed to get those classes in the order that I mentioned you can apply with a 4.0 for their fall 2016 semester. Good luck!!
