Louisville, Ky hospitals

I feel as if I'm at a disadvantage. I graduate in May 2003 with a BSN from Indiana University.......I then move home to Louisville, KY to find a job. Here is my dilemma: I have lived in Indianapolis for three years, working and going to school. I know a lot about the hospitals in Indy, but nothing about the hospitals in Louisville. HELP! I don't know where to start. I have called RN recruiters from many of the hospitals, no one has called back. I thought there was a shortage? My Question? CAN anyone help me with the Louisville area?... I'm interested in Peds ICU, NICU, and ER.....thanks, Tanya

Have you checked their websites to see what positions they have open. I live in south Ky...but only a couple of years ago, Jewish hospital was offering a 10,000$ sign on bonus. I remember all the Louisiville hospitals were looking for new grads. Good luck in your search. Something will come up.

I have e-mailed and called, and checked the websites extensively....why is this so difficult? I have no idea about sign on bonuses, or starting pay, or any info, because no one will call me/e-mail me back. The listings for jobs all say "2-3 years experience" and only med surge seems to be available on the sites, I know this cannot be true. Thanks for the advice, any at this point is helpful. Tanya

Tanya, how about looking at the classified from area papers??They should give you an idea of what is out there...

Don't forget to check out travel agencies....if you go as a traveler you can ck out the hospital before you sign on!

Use your library to check out the Sunday paper classified ads from the areas that are of interest to you and follow them up--especially those who are interested in new grads.

There is also a good possibility that some Indy hospitals are part of a chain (like Tenet), which has branches elsewhere--maybe where you want to be.

The traveler agency suggestion is excellent and you can find more out about agencies by checking out the "travel nursing" forum on this BB.

(And I'd soft-pedal the desperate and demanding tone.)

Go to http://www.courier-journal.com and look at the Sunday classifieds. There are usually bookoo ads on Sundays. Most of the major hospitals, there are 4 or 5 in the Norton chain, U of L, Jewish and Caritas, all offering bonuses and openings in the various depts. Med Surg does have a lot of the openings but I have seen ads for ICU, ER, OR, etc. There are many many agencies in the area as well once you get started if you think you will like that. If you go to Barnes & Nobles bookstore, they should have a Sunday paper or be able to get it for you. During the week there are few ads.

And I can't imagine why they don't call you back. Yes there is a shortage. I have work for Norton's agency and have worked every single day that I wanted to for two years, other than for about six weeks this winter when EVERYONE had low census for reasons beyond me.

I think you should seriously consider med-surg as a new grad.Don't expect to go directly into a specialty until you have done some med-surg floor work.
