Discouraged nurse

U.S.A. Louisiana

im an agency nurse, started out as an LPN in 2005, worked nursing home for a couple of years; went back for my ASN, and recently completed my BSN. this agency nursing is wearing on me because a lot of my shifts get cancelled when census' is low. I have put in several applications at several different facilities and haven't gotten any replies or call for an interview. I always question is nursing what i really want to do. It seems like someone is always watching you waiting for you to mess up. Most nurses I have run into tend to exaggerate and empasize your mistakes to glorify their own work (there are a few that i have met that don't). I just really don't understand if there is such a shortage, why isn't there any job positions open here in shreveport or bossier? I am very discouraged right now....any advice please. One of the most discouraging parts is the pay, working agency pays well, if i work full time at a facility, that will be at least a $8-10 decrease, and will be an even larger decrease if i work in some type of doctor's office or clinic....

one more question....why are there no black nurses in the ER?

Specializes in hospice, rehab, insurance CM.

I live in Houma and the job market is good here. Have you considered doing home health? It pays pretty well. You can take a salaried position or get paid on a per visit rate. Hospice pays even more.

Good luck and hang in there,

Eileen

i thought about home health a while back, but i don't think i would like it. i really like the ER, and it seems to be the only area with flexible hours other than just 7a-7p...but there are just no openings right now!

Specializes in AA&I, research, peds, radiation oncology.

Hi getitfromhermama, Congrats on your achievements!!! I hope to get there someday soon!!:wink2: You may have to move outside LA. Why not try Dallas or Houston? I'm an LVN in Dallas but I've had great jobs since moving here 6 years ago.

I can understand your concern abt no black nurses in the ER-moving is always a great option for advancement!!!;)
