Got this message from a colleague in Louisiana:
SB 192 is being introduced in the Louisiana Legislature. This bill seeks to transfer oversight of NP practice to the Louisiana State Board of Medical Examiners instead of the Board of Nursing. It also proposes that collaborative physicians be located no more than within a 20 mile radius. A step back towards independent practice.
If you're against this bill, an online petition is available: http://www.change.org/petitions/oppose-sb-192-la-state-senate?utm_campaign=petition_created&utm_medium=email&utm_source=guides

I'm surprised NPs will even work in states like Louisiana. I'm adding to my list of states to never live in.
BTW, your link goes to UCSF's outlook web access login page.

Wow! And I thought I was crazy for pursuing NP in Texas!

Oops, didn't mean to do that (revealing too much about myself, for one)
How about this: http://www.change.org/petitions/oppose-sb-192-la-state-senate?utm_campaign=petition_created&utm_medium=email&utm_source=guides.
Well, the truth is the residents of Louisiana deserve access to primary care just like any other states. Was there a year after Katrina and a bunch of NP's volunteered their skills to help out at the 9th Ward, one of the most ravaged sections of New Orleans which was still in need of much needed medical attention at the time.
You're right, just wish the people(aka the physicians that pushed for this legislature) who are supposed to want the people of Louisiana to have access to health care wouldn't hamstring a large group of providers willing to give it.

Welcome to the backwards, good ole boy state of Louisiana! It's home for me, so I don't think I'll be moving, but when I heard of that proposed bill, I did think of getting out of this state. I'm wondering if it's some sort of retaliation by the physicians for the proposed bill, that was shot down very quickly, last year which would have given np's independent practice. I, along with my fellow NPs, are disgusted and angry that something like this bill is even being proposed. Thank you Juan for posting about it. I encourage NPs everywhere to petition against it, as if it passes here, where else might it be tried next.
My understanding is the BON here was blindsided by this also.
Thank you, please take a moment to look at the petition.

I'm from Texas and lived in Louisiana for years. Both are on my no-work list!
I wish I knew firsthand what other states were like to work in like you others do. Thanks for taking an interest in this. Today I was telling my brother about this, he's an optometrist here in Louisiana. He's going to the state capital this week with other optometrists to meet with their lobby members to oppose the medical boards attempts to interfere with their practice. It's ongoing and not the first time he's had to deal with this. The NPs need to follow that example and respond in kind.
