Losing your license in Nevada?

U.S.A. Nevada

Published

I recently informed my clinical instructor that upon graduation I planned on moving to NV and practicing there. Her mandible nearly hit the floor. She was concerned that because Nevada has the highest patient:nurse ratio, I'd be setting myself up for a situation wherein I'd lose my license.

I know that many responders to this thread will say things like 'well, if you're good, you shouldn't have to worry about it' or 'if you are afraid to practice, then you better not', but instead of saying those things, I'd like to get a feel for how it actually is day-to-day in the hospital setting.

Are you caring for more than, say 4 patients per shift on a med/surg floor? That seems to be the going rate at the clinical site this year.

I welcome Nevada nurses thoughts...is my instructor out of line?

I took the posters message as the instructor was not warning her not to attempt a difficult assignment starting out in nursing. After further reading, I realized I overread the post. I do not think it is wrong to warn students of probable trouble spots. I wish more instructors would take the time to do it. I just wonder why NV is not doing like so many other places are doing, giving better money, seems like there is lots of it there, making working attractive by supplying scrubs(any color but your size for x amt of shifts worked) giving tickets to shows, free meals, whatever to get nurses. I do know the price of housing is skyhigh, my cousin lived in LV as a teen, when she went back to visit, she was astounded at what her old home cost in the market then, I would never guess what it would be now. Crime is on the rise too. My daughter was so surprised at some of the things she saw on her recent trip to Vegas. Me I guess I am just not cut out for that fast life, but I would like a long weekend there one of these days.

I am moving to Las Vegas, too, once I graduate next week. I keep hearing horror stories of 11:1 ratio. I rotated in AZ; worst it got was 6:1 on the Med-surg floors. Isn't there anyone in Las Vegas on this board who can support or deny this claim? I interview at Valley Hospital next week; I'll post the scoop there....

505girl,

Good luck on the job. Like you I read posts about how bad nursing ratios are there in LV, but I have no personal experience, so who knows. What position are you going for? Med/surg is a really good place to start. Anyway, one again, I wish you luck on the job and the move. :balloons:

Well, I really liked Med/surg during my clinical rotations, I LOVED how the 12 hours just flew by. But I know, even with 4 patients, it was hard for me to keep up. I used to live in Las Vegas, before I got accepted to school in Arizona. I was a pharmacy tech there for 3 years at Mountainview Hospital. ( And a tech for 10 years total) So, I kind of know about Mountainview through the grapevine and my experience working there. They seemed to have between 6-8 patients, clustered in pods. I liked working there.

My goal is to get a 3 day a week, 12 hour shift job at a hospital on a Med-Surg floor, and a 1 day a week job at a wound care or long term care facility there. There still is some affordable housing in NW Las Vegas; and that is a nice area. You can still find houses for $150,000 if you don't mind living in

"bad" areas. Maricopa County, also has some appealing nursing jobs...like med.nurses for inmates. (Well, its appealing to me at least) They have good starting salaries. UMC is nice because you don't pay FICA, and I have heard it is a good teaching hospital.

I also know all the good restaurants, casinos and hangouts...LOL

505girl - how did the interview go? Were you offered a position?

I dont interview till next week...I applied to Mountainview, UMC also. I just need to set up some more interviews. Oh, and also through an agency which is hiring for nurses at the Military Treatment Facility (Mike O callaghan hospital) near Nellis Air Force Base. A girl I am graduating with got a job at St.Rose Dominican also...I'll will keep you all posted...

Did you get an offer? If so, care to share starting salary? I'm 1yr away from my search in the area for a job.

Hey, 5050 girl,

Let us know what is happening with you!

Specializes in Medical/Surgical/Maternal and Child.
I work in Reno, NV (northern NV) and in my current, and final rotation on a Med-Nephrology floor, I have seen ratios during the day as high as 7:1, with a couple of RN's taking 8 patients. I'm appalled. I've been working at this facility for the past 1 1/2 years, but in a critical care area. We don't see this where we are at. I never realized there were staffing issues in the hospital until this rotation. This floor is notorious for this, I guess. It's a running joke around there.

My friend is an Apprentice Nurse in the GSU (General Surgical Unit) and she would take up to 9 patients at noc. Crazy to me.

Nevada is last in the nation with licensed RN's and has the highest shortage. It doesn't help that property is skyrocketing here (you can't TOUCH a house for under $325k and to find a decent one, you had better get closer to $400k) and gas is around $2.50/gallon for the cheapest stuff at the cheapest gas station. It's getting expensive to live here and I don't think the pay is increasing enough to keep up. I will be starting my new position in a critical care area for $26.35/hour, including my shift diff. (I will be working nocs). The hospital that is closest to my house (5 minutes away as opposed to the one I work at now, which is 30 min. away) pays about $2 more an hour, but their insurance rates are insane....$278 per paycheck for a family...that's over $500 a month!!! I also don't care for the hospital itself and love where I currently work. We are the only trauma hospital in the area and that's where my true love is at.

I love living here, enjoy the weather, the surroundings...just wish they would get more nurses!!!!

Melanie = )

I got my nursing degree at TMCC in 1993 and I'll bet you're working on the same unit I did as a new grad. I miss Reno so much. I lived in the Reno area for 25 years before coming back to Utah. PM me....

Hey, 5050 girl,

Let us know what is happening with you!

Well, the job seeking process has been slow; so far I have received only 1 official offer at the Valley Health System, $22.27/hour, $2300 sign on bonus for a 2 year committment, 15% more in your base pay (which would equal 25.60) if you dont take the paid time off. Day shift 7am-7pm on a Med-Surg Floor. I didn't take the offer because I want to work at Mountainview, which is like 2 minutes away, instead of 20-30 for the Valley Hospitals. I interviewed at UMC also; the person interviewing me was 20 minutes late--then proceeds to say, that she doesn't even know if there are any new grad positions left...I felt like it was a complete waste of my time. For hospitals with 100's of positions open, they sure aren't doing much to attract new grads...don't they realize if expereinced nurses aren't flocking into NV to fill these positions, that new grads is their only alternative? The Valley hospital said their ratio was 1:7 and sometimes 1:8. UMC said 1:6. Mountainview is 1:6. So....I will update you all soon...There are still alot of houses here for $250,000, however, $350,000 buys a house that doesnt needs renovation.

505 girl,

Keep your chin up.. That attitude is everywhere, the institution can need so many nurses but they just don't seem to know how to make you feel wanted and welcome. I hope you get the job you want soon. :balloons:

I accepted a job at Mountainview Hospital; Just under $22/hour, plus $2.00/hour for night shift differential, and an additional $1.50 on the weekends. 3/12 hour shift on Med-Surg, 1:6 ratio. 8 week preceptorship, all computer charting, and all of my moving/transfer expenses up to $5K paid for. Benefits after 30 days. Only 3 minutes from my place. The view of Mt. Charleston is nice...Now I just have to pass the NCLEX in two weeks...
