Los Angeles vs. NYC

Hello NYC!!!

I posted a thread about a year ago asking for inputs if i should choose Los Angeles, over NYC. But since ive never lived in the west coast before, i chose L.A. Its not bad, and im starting to like it. But i miss the east coast very much and want to move back. But i was reading the other posts and I've noticed that NYC hospitals only pay like 68000/year? is that for real? with the high cost of living??? and hows the staffing?? i work as a CTICU nurse in a level 1, trauma hospital in LA. we only get 1 or 2 patients at a time and the pay is more than 68000/year.

Anyways, i just wanted to know which is the best teaching hospital in the city, hows the staffing and the pay. Is it worth moving back??? hope to hear from you guys soon. thanks and HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!

Well, I guess most people would try to find the best employment situation possible, but for me it is the weather. I can't stand LA, but the weather is basically agreeable. I've been around snow and cold winters, and I'll take the moderate CA weather anyday. Of course, now that I'm older and suffer from some health problems associated with age, I'm more motivated to look for good weather. :wink2:

The pay sounds awfully low for NYC. When I left the City to move to northern CA in 1984 I was earning almost half that amount for 3X12 hr nights in the ED.

Why not try a travel nurse position to see if you like the City? It's a 13 week assignment and they provide housing or give you a stipend.

I really dont care about the weather, i lived in NJ so im pretty much used to cold weather. But i want to know the job satisfaaction in NYC compare to Southern CA. I work in a teaching hospital, so i want to know inputs from people working in teaching hospitals in NYC. Or those who have tried L.A. and NYC, which working conditions are you most satisfied. I love NYC, but hows the pay, the working condition, is it worth moving back?

I work at a Manhattan teaching hospital, and I really like it. I only started in September, and the new grad salary is $71,000, plus a night differential of $5600. If you have experience, you'll definitely be making more than that, so the $68,000 was a very low estimate, unless you're talking about a city hospital. I've never worked in LA, so I can't compare the working conditions, but I've had a really good experience so far.

I work at NYU Medical Center on a surgical unit, night shift. We usually have no more than 6 patients on the floor, and no more than 4 in our stepdown unit. I've heard our ICUs aren't the greatest work environment, but I've never worked there and can't elaborate as to why.

For an ICU RN with a BSN working nights, and couple years experience, you can expect over $80,000 in NYC

thanks steve. i see your an NP student. can i ask which hospital are you working at? hows the staffing of the units? Im in a cardiothoracic surgery ICU. any ideas? thanks.
