Lorcet OTC

Specialties Emergency

I've been thinking that it might be a good idea to make hydrocodone available over the counter. Right now enormous amounts of health care dollars are going to pay for patients using ERs to obtain Lorcet. If we could make it available kinda like alcohol (you must be 18, illegal to drive while on the stuff, tax the heck out of it...) think of the money we could save, in addition to using the tax money to fund rehab.

Since I've been a nurse, many drugs that were previously availabe only by prescription have gone over the counter: sudafed, benadryl, actifed, claritin, tavist-d, rogaine, ibuprofen, naprosyn, tagamet, pepcid, prevacid, cortisone cream, monostat, pyridium, nicotine patches and gum... I'm sure there's more that can't think of right now. Plus in many places cough medication with codeine is available otc (although you must sign it out with the pharmacist). You don't need a prescription for insulin either (at least in my state). Several states are making the morning after pill available otc and the fda is thinking of adding cholesterol lowing drugs to the current otc list.

What do y'all think?

Are you guys looking at the bottom of the screen (under our posts) as you type? Maybe we're debating a moot point: "Lorocet, Percocet! US Doctors perscribing! Pill-depot.com, slimmeryou.com" This is crazy. I know the arguments about these sites, you don't know the concentrations, etc. But it seems like anyone with access to the internet and a credit card can get their fix pretty easily. But yes, the abuse is tremendous in the ER, maybe if we have these websites posted in the lobby...problem solved! (totally kidding for those that don't get it)

Yeah, we've often joked that we could make a fortune off of having a vending machine in the lobby of the ER that sold lortab, work exuse, and fleet enema packs.

I "love" the lil old ladies who come to the ER over and over again with constipation of impaction and they can't figure out why. They are taking their Metamucil like the doctot said and drinking plenty of water... and taking lortab 5 QID, lol.

I look at it like this... if alcohol were controlled by the FDA, it would be a class II narcotic. Legalize everything and tax the hell out of it just like they do booze and cigarettes. Addicts will always find a way to get their drug of choice anyway, until they've had enough and want help. Why should drug dealers be making all the profit when the taxes raised could be used for oh, say paying off the deficit or something? For years Donnatal PG was available without a prescription but the pharmacy kept up with who bought it, why not with all kinds of drugs? There are many countries in the world that are much more relaxed about narcotics than the US is and they have much lower addiction rates than the US does. They must be doing something right.

ITA. We are so fixated on controlling everyone's drug use in the US. It hasn't worked and we are no better off as far as number of addicts than the European countries and Canada who have a more relaxed attitude about drugs. When will we ever learn?

LOL!!!

I want one of your vending machines!!!

Except in my neck of the woods it's vicodin all the way!!

:rotfl:

I guess it's a good thing Lortab makes me puke, huh? :chuckle Although, Demerol can be nice....(j/k! :p) I'm really not fond of the spacey-feeling I get when I'm buzzing on anything. I just don't get why people want to be high. I don't like feeling out-of-control of myself. I can't imagine seeking out the feeling deliberately.

Anywho, I'm all for legalizing & taxing marijuana & a few other things. There are follks sitting in jail for an ounce of marijuana who'll never see the light of day again due to mandatory sentenciing laws, but someone who killed another person can be released on parole.

I can practically vomit on command when faced with codeine of any sort. My husbands friend has literally begged me to give him my hycodan syrup -- which of course brings forth the uptight wife stern lecture. I just don't see the joy. Now, give me the pre-surgery drugs, and I love everybody. Why can't we sent that stuff to Iraq?

That's my point exactly. Our justice system punishes people for one ounce of marijuana, but lets people like like the Enron and other other slimeball executives who stole their employee's retirements walk around scott free. It makes no sense. This country is so uptight on drugs that it doesn't see the bigger picture that nurses do -- there's tons of LEGAL money to be made, and safer ways to feed addictions than the system presently in place. Does anyone remember when the pot was laced with PCP and people were freaking about this? This happened a long time ago -- I think I was in grade school or something, and I remember feeling very scared for those people. How dreadful. But i also couldn't understand why someone would lace pot w/ PCP and try to hurt others. But I digress.

It just seems that we are focused on this right-wing 'drugs are evil' campaign and we as nurses know this isn't the case. I don't want to promote drug addiction or drug taking and I sure as sunrise don't want LOL's coming into my ER c/o constipation, :nono: because until the "blessed event" occurs then they are the biggest complainers -- does anyone agree? I think it's dreadfully uncomfortable to be that constipated, but I cringe when I see the "constipated x 1 day" chief complaint. And a soap-suds enema positively ruins my day... the docs know this and give me the order anyway with a kind of "so sorry" smile on their faces (but I KNOW they arent' sorry :chuckle )... OK, end of poop-impaired rant.

Why shouldn't the government and us as contributing members of society make some extra $$$ for it? Medicare will be dead in the water before I see a penny of it -- if this adds to the bottom line then sign me up. End the war on drugs, or at least make it hospice appropriate, tax the people who will get their fix elsewhere while saving them the added inconvience of having a 'bad trip' if the drug formulation is regulated, and use the money for the greater good instead of going to gangs who will kill people for drug territory -- adding yet another dimension to our over crowded ER's!

Bring on the Ativan salt-lick in Triage! I'll be the first customer!

Happy Easter, yall.

My feeling is anything that leads to an increase of "can't poop" chief complaints in the ER is bad..bad...baaaaaddd...

And you know that they'll all come in complaining at 3am. ;)

I know that England is more relaxed about what it sells OTC. I remember going over there in '90 and getting something for a bad headache (used to happen all the time when I'd fly above a certain altitude). I looked at the package afterward and saw that it contained something (codeine?) that would never be sold OTC in the US.

I've heard from U.K. patients that it's Tylenol #3 they sell OTC there. But you need a script to purchase ASA! (Too many side effects)

As for marijuana, anyone been to Amsterdam? Waterfront area is wide open for pot and hash bars. It wasn't the stoners who worried me, it was the belligerent drunks.

I'll put it this way -- I didn't do anything that was contrary to local laws. When in Rome, do as the Romans do. And when in Amsterdam, then I'll be damned! I could tell you about some short grass, Tom...

In Canada, Tylenol Codeine is avail. without a script, you just have to ask the pharmacist for it.
