looking for an online staffing firm

Hi all, I am new to travel/per diem nursing and was wondering if there are any online staffing firms out there? I was told there was one out there that covered California but can't seem to find it.

Not sure what you mean. All agencies have a webpage, and most allow you to sign up online. There are no online lists of all current assignments in California.

I was looking to book online without phonecalls etc - e.g. search for work and apply online, just so that its more organised.

I used to do regular temp work for an agency and it seemed messy, I would get a phone call with where to go etc and then I had to keep records etc.

Seems like it would be more efficient if done online? Maybe if there was an app?

Unfortunately that would be a dream and also possibly a nightmare. Every company has a website but not all list assignments available online to you. If you go with a larger well known company they do list what jobs are available to you online and your recruiter sets everything up for you if you select a job. Dealing without a recruiter could be a real "mess" they are there to make things run smoothly for you. If you have one that is too pushy, tell them to back off or ask for a different one.

You will not find a 100% online staffing company. You eventually have to talk to people - for your safety as well as the clients.

A good recruiter does everything you could imagine. They screen your abilities, experience, and preferences to come up with a compatible assignment. There is no way you could do that on your own just from viewing job postings, at least until you have significant travel experience.

There are some advertising sites that you can sign up for and agencies will call you. Don't do it! You would rather screen agencies and recruiters on your own rather than have random ones call you. And once you are on the list, you will be receiving calls forever.

The receiving endless calls is what I was trying to avoid - I like my iphone and am always online, which is why I thought that would be an easier way to go.
