Looking for Nursing schools in California that accept International students

Hello, I'm a graduate of BSN in the Philippines batch 2012 and applied for NCLEX-RN here in California. After completing all the requirements the Ca-BRN wrote me a letter telling me that I have some deficiencies (MS, OB, Pedia and Psych) which have something to do with the concurrency issue and go back to school to complete the said deficiencies.

I asked some schools near my place. One school didn't credit all the subjects that I took which I have to go back to zero and other schools I'm still waiting for them to call back to meet with the counselor about my situation.

While waiting I want to ask if anyone knows some nursing schools that is accredited by the CA-BRN that accepts foreign students to enroll just the deficiencies. Thank you in advance to anyone who will reply to this message :)

Just FYI, I emailed the Dean of Nursing of South Texas College if they offer Med/Surg and OB but unfortunately they don't.

Hi everyone,

I am just wondering if anyone here is taking or already took Med/Surg and OB courses out of state? If yes, did you ask the CA BRN for approval of the course description of the school you are going to? Or as long as the school is ACEN approved and on the approved list of the state board of nursing , we are able to get approved by CA BRN ? Please let me know.

Thanks!

Hi! Just wanna ask what were the requirements when you get a slot. Did you take any exams such as teas?

they offer MS and OB every summer. you can call them every September to be included in the wait list for next year's class. most are Filipinos but there are students from other countries too. program is cheaper ($5k for 2 subjects) compare to other schools. clinical instructors are nice and impressive.

To those who successfully submitted their Foreign RN Petition at Pierce College, what did you write on the 'State Details of Petition'? Thank you.

Hi BelleRose, I was just wondering if you were able to apply and send the petition letter to pierce college? You did, what did you put in the 'state Petition details' thanks..

I'm just wondering what school still accepting foreign students ?

I got in to Unitek but it was too far from me so I tried my luck in AUHS and I got in

Did you receive a letter from the board stating you have deficiencies? I was planning on enrolling to unitek but eventually i haven't gotten any letter from CABON yet. What did you do in the event that your school was not able to submit the complete record of your clinical cases and academic calendar?

Hey guys!

I'm new here with the same problem. And the same question. It's 2019 and I need help. I'm absolutely sure most of you here have completed the program. I'm humbly asking for your help as I live around vallejo, ca and I cant just drive to other cities of california because of work. The only option for me here is to look for schools around the bay. Anyway, do you guys happen to know schools that offers med/surg and ob other than dominican university and samuel merritt? I would truly appreciate if someone answers me. Thanks for the help!

MY JOURNEY AS AN INTERNATIONAL STUDENT

I started looking for schools around July 2015. I literally called all the school that were listed on the California BRN website. I lived in the Bay Area, but I didn't care if the school was going to be in socal or central california. I just wanted to take the classes I needed ASAP. I got lucky because Unitek happened to be close to where I live and there was no wait list at that time. It was July when I found the school and the med surg class I needed started in September, so I only had to wait two months. The downside with this is that it was a private school, so I ended up paying 20k+ for just 1 class. The class lasted 4 months and was Monday to Friday, 8-4pm.

I heard Unitek has a waitlist now. I don't know how quickly you wanted to get this over with, but during my time, some of my classmates lived in Sacramento, Stockton, or LA. Some of them had work too and had families they needed to continue supporting. Some of them quit their jobs so they could focus full time on the class. Some of them commuted 4 hours back-and-forth to get to class every day. Everyone had a different situation but needed the class. No one I knew could afford the 20k out of pocket, so most of us took student loans or borrowed from their home equity. But looking back, I don’t regret paying 20k to finish my prerequisites ASAP rather than waiting for cheaper schools with longer waitlists (1-2 years was what I was hearing for other programs).

Initially, I got a letter from the BRN stating that I needed MS and OB. I was almost done with my MS class when some of my classmates received a letter stating that they don't need to take OB anymore. So I called the BRN just to ask and to confirm if I still need to take OB. They told me I don't need to take it anymore, but they never sent me a formal letter confirming it. I don't know what they base their decisions on, but it wouldn't hurt to ask so you potentially can save time and money.

Another route that I was thinking about but didn’t pursue: I thought of taking my NCLEX exam in a different state, since many other states don't have as strict requirements as California (Florida, Texas, Nevada, etc.). Once I got my license in a different state, I would just file for reciprocity after I finished my med surg and OB class in California. This way I wouldn’t need to wait until I finished my classes before taking the NCLEX exam. I wanted to get my NCLEX exam over with right after med surg, since I was in academic/study mode already. Thankfully, since I didn’t need OB anymore, I didn’t have to pursue this route.

I hope this helps. Good luck!

hi @nsg1234,

To answer your question, yes I have the letter from CA BRN. You're right, there's a waiting list now if anyone is trying to get in to Unitek. Also, just found out last friday (I called the admin office) NAPA community college will be offering these clinical courses in the Fall. So for anyone who lives close to the area this is great news. I am a former student of Dominican and the University is a private school-- with that being said, tuition fee is pricey. I was only able to finish my med/surg 1 class (year 2016) because I couldn't afford the whole program and this is why I ended up looking for something cheaper-- which I did, and that is SF State University. And you're right again, cheaper schools means waiting list will take forever. And it's been a little over 2 years now and I am still on the waiting list. It's taking a hella toll on me until yesterday I got an email from Dominican stating they'd love to have me around again and their med surg 2 class will start on the 28th of May. And I realized that money will be paid off anyway as soon as I become an RN so yes you're right again for the third time I realized also it will be worth it towards the end. So yes friends I'm going back to Dominican. Good luck taking the boards try to reconsider taking it here. I had classmates before who took and passed the Nclex rn from another state but they still had to take med/surg 3 class even if they have reciprocity. Call the CA BRN who knows they might've changed the requirements for this. ❤️ good luck to all of us.
