Hey y'all! So, I am a new Active Duty nurse stationed in San Diego. I met my wife in nursing school and she moved out here with me in August. We both graduated in May 2013, and she just got her CA license (we moved from out of state). Now we are looking hard at landing her a job, and she is starting to get anxious about it. Anyone with suggestions on how we can get the ball rolling? She is interested in L&D, pediatrics, but would be willing to do anything in the hospital setting.
Thanks!

Hi Navynursenette, I know a new grad who was able to land an L&D job at a military hospital by volunteering with the local Red Cross chapter. Thats how she got her foot in the door. I know it stinks to think of "volunteering" as a newly licensed RN but it worked for her. Good luck.

Is there a reason you are not looking for non-hospital positions? Just curious.

It's a tough world for new grads in a lot of places. If she isn't getting any interviews, she may need to widen the net a bit and look outside of hospital positions to get some experience under her belt. Good luck.

Does she have a BSN? ADN's are pretty much unemployable in San Diego right now. (Came from the Nurse Manager of a medsurg floor at UCSD hospital)
Yes, she had a BSN when she was hired. I do know of associates prepared nurses working in military hospitals but they had been working there for years. If shes dead set on working in a hospital, she can look into volunteering at the red cross. Im pretty sure all MTFs have one. Otherwise, like previously stated, she should consider looking outside of the hospital setting.

New grad in military hospital? Yeah probably not going to happen. Try looking around base. Military hospitals are it were recently on a hiring freeze and new grads are the least likely to get jobs.

Make sure she is looking on usajobs.gov for gs positions or monster for the contract. Gs she will get spouse preferred. Also why not just go to the floors and talk to the division officers at your command?
