Looking For Other Pa Nurses!!!!

U.S.A. Pennsylvania

Published

Hello all,

I'm taking this chance to meet other nurses in PA. Who knows, maybe I've meant some of you. I graduated a year ago, and meant a lot of other nursing students in clinicals, and such.

Anyway, if you're interested in joining this discussion to meet others in PA who are recent grads., leave some comments.

Anyway, I'm wondering what kinds of hours everyone else is working, where people are working, what kinds of skills you're all learning, and your current job satisfaction, etc. Right now, I work quite a number of hours in a cardiovascular surgical unit. It's pretty good experience. Sometimes I find I get taken advantage of to work a lot of hours, but most times I don't mind, cuz I get a lot of good experience. I may move on to CRNA school someday. Any body else have grad. school aspriations?

Anyway, if you're a recent grad. or from PA, join the discussion, and let people know what's out there for new grads.

Thanks,

Repete495

Hi Sarah,

I'd like to know all you can tell me about your job. I am really interested. Would it be something for a new LPN grad to attempt? I need to start working ASAP. But I keep hearing and seeing all these nightmares!!! I worked one place 5 days and nearly had heart failure! The mistakes I saw and the carelessness is really hard to just "Overlook" !! Please help!

Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Margie

i have no clue about the football games, because i wasn't born up here. i'm originally from carbon county, a little town called lansford. nice to see another career tech grad tho.

scranton is making a comeback tho. parks are nice and green and clean, they even want to do a handicapped-accessable treehouse in nay aug now. downtown is being re-vitalized, and it's a fairly nice place to live now. i'm still moving to fl in sept or oct tho! lol

johnbear, i live in football city. it's the home of the penn state nittany lions. they are a big 10 conference team. some people call it paternoville here in state college, and you should see the growth here!!!! we have new 4 lane highways here, there, and everywhere, and brand new student housing, and malls galore. our newest one is not far from here. new eating places; everything from a - z.

A nurse after my own heart:DDid you know Joe Pa lives close to campus, and still lives in the house he had built in 1974? And he walks to work and to the home games when they are played here. That's one of the reasons he's still head coach at Penn State, and is either 79 or 80 years young. You go Joe!! You have one loyal fan here.

I just graduated from Penn State Unversity in May. I am working in CCU at a local hospital. I went to Penn State Hershey Medical Center for some of my clinical rotations. (NICU and PEDS, and outpatient psyche) I was able, last summer to "ride along" with Life Lion too. Several of my classmates have started their in the MICU and SICU.
Are you or did you work at Mount Nittany Medical Center?

state college has grown by leaps and bounds the last few years, and our hospital has even turned into a medical center with a trauma center just 40 minutes from here in altoona.

Hi Fran. As I said I live and work near Gettyburg but we have property near Raystown Lake and go there frequently on weekends. That's getting close to your neck of the woods. I love it there. In 10-15 yrs or so, my husband and I may move there permanently. I love VNA but I think that all of the mountain roads there would make it a difficult job. I would consider Huntingdon, Altoona, or State College then. Anyway, what kind of nursing do you do? Deanna

Hi Deanna, I know where Raystown Lake is. Did you know that I99 is now nearly complete up to State College, and that we now have 4 lane highways everywhere here? It's totally different from when I first moved here in 1996.

My last assignment was helping an elderly lady who had a CVA and a very bad heart.

I'm now unable to actively do nursing, but do know several of the nurses at our hospital. I have been in and out of it so many times I have literally lost count. It all began after I graduated from nursing school.

I knew my cholesterol was high, so wanting to keep my perfect attendance that I received an award for while in school, I bought some niacin at the local drug store.

Knowing that it's a water soluable vitamin, and looking up in my drug book for the lowest possible dosage to treat high cholesterol, I began taking them. After about one third of the bottle was gone, I had an anaphylactic reaction that kept me in and out of the hospital all summer long. That was back in 1997. That was the beginning of my health problems, but after I was well enough, I did go to Weight Watchers and began exercising again. I walked all over State College, and managed to get myself back in shape.I did get my license though, and kept it current.

Then in April 2001, I was hospitalized again with status asthmaticus. I was there nearly a week, and doing well until Palm Sunday. That day as I was doing one of my regular 3 walks, while pushing a wheelchair that contained an oxygen tank for my breathing.

I suddenly felt breathless, so I sat in the wheelchair until I got my breath back. But by the time I got to the end of the hall, it happened again. I didn't know a doctor was watching me. He walked down to where I was sitting, ordered a stat x ray, but nothing showed. Anyway, I managed to get back to the nurses desk and asked for the rest of the day free since I felt like I weighed a ton, and felt like I ran a marathon.

The next day, after many different tries at different methods to find out what was wrong with me, a PE was found. During steroid therapy again on Solu Medrol, I also got steroid induced myopathy. I had my med book and learned the PE was caused by the Prednisone too.

It took about 9 months before I was back to where I was able to get around normally.

Then in March 2002, I was hospitalized again with pneumonia. I was in there for 5 weeks due to my respiratory failure and being placed on a vent. It was then that I was diagnosed with Chronic asthmatic bronchitis, and I was hospitalized x4 that year. Twice I crashed in the ER and was placed on a vent. The second time, I was also septic.

So now I'm in endstage COPD with hypoxemia, and also have CHF, and chronic lung pain due to pulmonary hypertension. I'm taking strong meds to counteract the effects, and my new physician has me stabilized.

Other than the OA that is a constant pain, I am in fine shape.:D

Specializes in ER.

I am from Jersey Shore PA just 45 min. north of Happy Valley.
